Trying to decide on 711 or 615, I prefer the 711. Thin barrel, a1 lower.

Anyone got pics of their 711 build.

Basically, it's an m16a1 with a2 furniture?

Also has skinny, A1 profile, 1:7 barrel. (They built a few of these before the A2 barrel was adopted.)

Model would be M16A1E1.

It's a 703 with A2 furniture.  Colt's brochure describes it as "Otherwise, identical to the Model 703."

It's what we had in my first unit.  I remember specifically that we were not to shoot M855 through them, so we shot a lot of M193. Mine had an early grip, A2 handguards, and A2 buttstock.  Everything else was 703.  We had a few in the unit that had A2 grips.  It was an ideal infantry rifle, and wasn't half bad for reconnaissance either, since it was so light and handy.

A lot of A1's were simply brought up to A2 'spec' back then while they waited or A2's to come in, simply by the expedient course of replacing the furniture, so it was likely a 1:12 twist you had. If anything, they were more common from what I understand.

I thought the 703 had .750 and A2 upper and 711 had .625 and A1 upper? Both had A2 furniture .

Wasn't there a vet on here that was an armorer back then that said he swapped all the A1 furniture over to A2 because he thought it looked better?

Ya we all wanted the "new" A2 handguards when we were issued A1's. I also used to drool over the rifles with optics on display at th e Ft Benning Infantry HQ.

The 711 also has the reinforced A2 lower.

So, is there a larger amount of 711s with A1 lowers than there are A2? I've got a preban SGW, (now Olympic), A1 lower that I was going to use for this particular build..........

I just put together a transition al A1E1 PIP, almost your spec but with all A1 on the A1 lower.
Big button FA, A2 hg's and Gov't 20" 1/7 with an A1 flash hider.
A1 upper, no deflector, and CMO "M16 Marksman" marked 4x scope :)
Based it on the early transitional A2's as per BRII

It has to one of my all time fav's.  Love the old and new mix on this one.  Of all of them
I've done, this feels the best.

Of course the 603 clone.....

It's one of my favorite configurations.

To be honest, I never liked the A1 handguards all that much for actual shooting.

And I really didn't like them after burning my fingers on a live fire range after 180 rounds were expended rapidly.

I have a build very close to that but it sports an FN pencil barrel, black slipring, and a teardrop FA......oh and it's black. Very accurate well balanced rifle that feels and handles great. Nice build.

Would a non deflector upper work for an accurate depiction of a 711?
If not, I need to trade an 603 type without deflector for one with one.

Ok, cool, but I guess I want an A1 with a deflector for the build as it will be a progression build . I don't have an A1 with deflector type rifle so that wlll be what it has to be......

Looks to have the big head forward assist also.

So, with or without deflector would be fine to build as long as it's an A1 upper? I'm still leaning toward the deflector upper as I don't have an A1 with it.

I used a teardrop FA on my 711 build, granted I couldn't find a bighead FA at the time, and with an A2 lower the bighead FA has to be modified to correctly work.

Bought an Essential Arms with everything seeming to match the 711 type. It has a small head FA, but I have a large head FA handy. Should I put the large head on it?
