Hi all,

I recently bought a used Elite Arms AR.

It has some nice upgrades and extras, especially the barrel, which is a custom made 18" SS spiral fluted heavy.

However, the lower (and upper) receivers look like they should say Krylon on the side.

This has to be the worst finish I've ever seen on any gun.

I can literally scratch off the finish with my fingernail around the text!

In any case, I'm not too concerned, since I was planning to Moly Resin it in anyway.

Here's my question:

I'd like to fill the markings (logo, company name, etc...) with JB weld or whatever before I refinish it.

The Elite Arms logo is some kinda goofy-looking skull thing. It has got to go.

I called ATF this morning, and asked which markings must be left and which can be erased.

He said that I have to leave the Mfg name, city and state, and the serial.

Can I get a second opinion on that?

It's not that I doubt the agent's info, I'd just like to see a link to the relevant ATF regulation that I can keep in case anyone ever tries to give me grief about it.

I hunted around atf.gov this morning, but can't seem to find the right section.

Thanks in advance,

Elmojo

I can't give you a legal opinion on that, but it's consistent with what I've always understood.

You might want to ask in one of the industry forums to see if one of our sponsor mfr's can elaborate.

In addition to checking on federal requirements, it would also be prudent to check on state statutes and regulations concerning defacing a firearm.
