I decided a few days before X-mas that I was going to do a build from an M&A kit.
In the past I've always bought all the parts separately, but this was going to be kind a spur of the moment k.i.s.s. rifle.
So, the thursday before Christmas I head over to my local FFL and order a lower.
Then after all of the holiday festivities on Christmas Day night I decide to order the parts kit.
Now I'm used to a few weeks of waiting for the FFL, many nights deciding on parts, configurations, etc and then several visits from the big brown truck of joy before any thing even starts to get built.
Anyway, I get home from work on friday and there is the kit, 4 days, and one
of them was Christmas. WOW
Saturday PM I head over to the FFL and the lower is there, ok cool.
Then I get home and I realize that I got all the parts that I need.
So here is how the rest of the day went:
2:45 pm
Wife is cleaning, I am "watching" the kids I figure I'll just throw on the buffer tube
, so I retrieve some tools and the kit. I sat down on the couch with the baby on my lap and started playing with the lower. I busted open the lpk and gave it a quick look, everything was there including an extra selector detent.
3:20
Time out to put on a Barbie video for the 3 year old.
3:35
Twenty min. time out because the 3 year old inserted the take down pin with the spring in place while I wasn't looking, at least she knew where it went. I mangled the spring getting it out, but it was ok because I had another. Then I lost the selector detent when the baby kicked the lower as I was installing the grip. No big deal they sent 2.
3:55
Slap on the upper and an old carry handle I had. Done.
4:30
Wife finds selector detent in baby's shirt
4:35
wife shuts up
Way too smooth. No waiting, returning, adjusting. What now.
Seven days from idea to range...I can't afford that pace.
$700 total cost for a 16" carbine with green furniture and a stubby stock.
Next is going to be a big bore, should be plenty of back ordered stuff with that.
