I took a gas tube out of an upper and cleaned it up, loads of carbon on it. Any reason not to re-use it or use a new one?

If it's in good shape, I don't see why you wouldn't reuse it.

While you have it out check to see if the raised "flange" around the mouth of the tube (where it enters the key) is worn flat.  If it is now is a good tim to replace it.  A worn gas tube can cause leaks that lead to short stroking.  It took me a long time and alot of parts to fix my short stroke problem.  In the end it was the gas tube.
