Well today I finally bought a Bushmaster M4 A3 w/ Izzy Flash Suppressor. Brand new with all the nice pre-ban features.
This is my first assult rifle, so I am sure I will have a lot of questions and I know I will get a ton of useful info from you guys. I was told for plinking that a lot of guys use Wolf ammo by the dealer. I didn't buy any yet and I don't want to get crap that jams, so what do you recommend? http://users.rcn.com/thejackal/12.jpg |
Good choice. The Bushy is a great rifle. I have the 16" version. It performs flawlessy. For ammo I would recommend Federal/Lake City XM193, Winchester Q3131A or Black Hills Blue box 55gr.
Pretty much anything except Wolf. My 16" M4gery shoots the hell out of it, but my 24" colt doesn't like to digest it at all. |
Certainly a nice group of ammo in that pic. |
You're bushmaster should have no problem shooting Wolf ammunition, however you might want to try some of the better ammo to start out with. The steel that the AR is made out of is much stronger than the steel used in Wolf ammunition. I've shot mountains of Wolf with my Bushmaster with no problems. It is not the most accurate, cleanest, or most consistent ammo in the world, but for cheap blasting it can't be beat.

Well I looked at the Black Hills blue box as stated above. Why the choice of remanufactured ammo? I would think brand new ammo would be better and less of a chance of some kind of brass failure. Guessing it is reloaded???
if i recall correctly its loaded on once fired brass. great plinking ammo! |
The remanufactured BH is as good or better than any new commercial ammo you can buy. It is remanufactued on the same line with the same process as the new ammo with the same quality control standards. No need to spend extra for the new stuff. |
CONGRATULATIONS. You've been infected. Hope you have a good revenue stream, cuz one's just never enough.
Black Hills makes their own new ammo as well. It's in a Red Box. However, BH Blue Box stuff is most usually using high-grade bullets, and a consistent powder load. Not to mention it's a fair bit cheaper. I'm sure you can have a brass failure, but I've never seen any so far that have looked even close. They've all been perfect. |
I've never shot the Black Hills stuff, so when I saw you guys recommending it (along with Midway on another thread) I went ahead and checked out the price. That stuff is DOUBLE the price of XM193 ammo. $394.99 for the Black Hills stuff from Midway (1000) as opposed to $184.50 the Federal XM193's cost per (1000) from Ammosales.com.
You WERE NOT looking at BH blue box 55gr. Yes it is a bit more expensive than XM193 but it's nowhere near the price you quoted. You must have been looking at the 75gr or something. 55gr goes for about $230-240/1000 shipped. www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/427391 You were looking at 50gr ballistic tipped varmint ammo.

Can I scold him for using the term "assault" rifle. It is my new pet peeve, as in that's what a lib-dem-o-crap would label them. (as in assault can denote a crime.)
maybe too critical I know. ...I like the term "battle rifle" |
Congrats on your new Bushmaster, Bushmaster was also my first AR. I'd fired a few hundred rounds of brass cased ammo & than ran Wolf. All my ARs digest wolf ammo, thousands of rounds, have yet replaced any parts, dont see no need to.(no additional ware)
I have just under 6000rds of ss109 & M885, saved for a rainy day,but use wolf for general plinking. TG |

My mistake. The box is blue in color and the description says: Black Hills remanefactured Ammunition 223 Remington 50 grain Hornady V-Max case of 1000. So I thought they were the ones everyone was referring to. |
Absolutely NOTHING! They are wonderful wonderful weapons! It's the sickness that's the problem. Oh and by the way, congratulations on the new rifle Jackal man! |
yeah but now you guys have me thinking of some way to make my AR different than every other black rifle out there. |
Assault rifles are full auto. Battle Rifles have usually been considered .308 and above. |
You guys need to come up with something to call it. Every name is overspecialised, so pick a name for all of us who have rifles that are so un-special that they are special. and make it something warm and fuzzy, so people cant get mad and use it against you. Like something to do with dolphins and rainbows or something. |

Uh huh...that's the 2nd phase of the disease: the never ending search for the phantom "Unique" AR15.....LOL! I do know what you mean though Mr. Tom. The thought of stripping the finish off one of my AR's with a glass bead blaster to give the gun a 2-tone look crossed my mind and I just might do it. Make it look kinda like this: http://www.dsarms.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=SA58TACSS&storeid=1&image=sa58mwtactltd.gif |

Jackal, Black Hills remanufactured is probably more accurate than most new factory ammo. Dont let that fool you. |
OK my turn. Actually a true assault rifle, by the strictest definition would be selective fire. If it was FA only it would be a machinegun, strictly speaking. Agree with the battle rifle being .308 or the like, like a FAL or G3, though they could also technically be called an "assault rifle". OK getting thick on the semantics. Now here's one for you. Since the FN L1A1/C1 was designed as Semi-auto only, can only be a ballte rifle, right? Semi-auto sporting rifle or carbine is my favorite term, but defensive carbine, tactical carbine, etc would work too. Semi-auto carbine is probably the most apt description. |

if you dont want to spend 24 cents round try the georgia arms reman ammo, i can get around 1inch groups some less some more out of my AR
its about 167.00 for 1000 shipped to your door but if you do wanna spend 24 cents for super accurate ammo I think fulton armory has the best prices on BH rem ammo |
sorry about the "assult rifle" thing. i guess i was listening too much to the "assult weapons ban" crap.
anyway the reason i don't want to use remanufactured ammo is because the possibility of a failure. but i guess that can happen with new ammo too. what about that military surplus green tip (steel core) junk? is it just that? junk? maybe winchester q3131a ammo is pretty cheap too. does anyone have a bunch of websites that they order ammo from? |
Jackal you can't go wrong with Eric the ammoman. Fast delivery, always tells you what's stock and whats not. And never any shipping charges, so consider that when you compare prices. AmmoMan And don't expect the XM193 to be pretty, but expect it to work. It's good SHTF stuff. |
I have used the Georgia Arms ammo also. It is good stuff. I would not hesitate to shoot it again.
Congrats
I use Federal for plinking and Black Hills reloads for target. Half dollar size grouping at 100 yards could do better with pratice. I have a DPMS 16" Doesn't the AR stand for assault rifle.? |
Negative. The AR stands for the first two letters of ArmaLite.
BlackHills ammo rox...and the quality of their remanufactured fodder puts the brand new imported el cheapo stuff to shame...no laquer coated steel cases or crappy copper flashed steel jacketed bullets...BH uses real brass and real copper jacketed bullets...and right in the hunt price wise.
Maybe this link will explain better...just click on the link and then select the "Remanufactured Ammo" tab off to the left there.. www.black-hills.com/ imho?...as long as BH is in business and making Blue Box Re-Man. Ammo?...there's no good reason to ever buy and blow the cheap imported crap through your baby ever again...and for bonus points?...it's "Made In The U.S.A." L8R, Bill. |
I thought it stood for ARmalite? |
How about "Tactical Rifle"? |

Very funny! Well, I don't plan on buying another AR, anytime soon. First I have to get a nice case, then maybe a really nice optic - trijicon possibly, maybe a bayonet, etc. Speaking of bayonets, which one will fit my rifle? This is the 14.5" barel with izzy supressor. I would like to also get an AK-47 but, one something made by atlantic firearms, I think they are in the USA. I have always wanted a commando AR, or "shorty", but when I was 20 all hell broke loose with the ban. Then I was pissed and didn't want to pay the extreme prices for a pre-ban. Now that crap is done with I got what I always wanted with all the goodness of brand new. |
Absolutely nothing wrong with BH blue box.
My dept. issues Win Ranger 69gr for our duty rifles, but those of us on SOU utilize BH blue box 60gr SP. We have fired thousands upon thousands of rounds of it with no malfunctions that could be attributed to the ammo. I also have a case of Win Q3131A tucked away for a rainy day. |
