Went into a local hardware store today and was surprised to see some 5.56 ball ammo on the shelf. 30 round boxes are marked as follows:

30 RD
5,56 x 45 mm
BALL
M1A4

with stamped on the side 044D96
thought maybe this was South African, please confirm or correct me if I am wrong about it. He wasn't exactly giving it away though, what is a good price for this ammo?

Yes, M1A4 is SA 5.56.  Should be dated around 1989-90.  I would pay around $5.00 per 30 rd box.

I have a box of ammo marked:
30 RD
5,56 x 45 mm
BALL
M1A3

What is the diff between M1A3 and M1A4?

The headstamp on the stuff in the hardware store said 96 at 12 o'clock and 14 at 6 o'clock

so, apparently 1996, was not aware the South African was that current. He wants approx. $ 6.50 per box for it. Had maybe 20 boxes of it on the shelf.

thanks for confirming it is SA, now I have to decide if I want to pay that much
