You don't hear much about this piece of equipment these days but I'm putting together a new carbine and I'm considering using one.  I already have a GG&G Aimpoint ring to mount on the RAS II hump, I understand it to be a fairly simple install, and they can still be had for under 300 bucks.  What reasons exist not to use an RAS II?  How solid a setup is it?

I got in on the "Shot Show Special" that dealers were offering a few years ago (RAS II, four rail pannels, and a Knights VFG for $275). I love mine. I mount my aimpoint right on top of the hump so its perfect for me. Solid as a rock, free floats the bbl (not really a big issue for me), and as you said, easy to install.

I like my RAS forends.  They look clean and feel good to my hand.

Early on there was some problems with them but that was eliminated with the introduction of the second model.

Detractors say that they are a little heavier than competitors models and don't dissipate heat as quickly as others.  They weight issue is minimal, and I believe that about the time that the forend is too hot to handle is shortly before the time you will experience gas tube failure.  I think of it as an early warning system.

I have two of the RAS II's and like them... The only problem might be if you intend on running an optical sight that might not co-exist well with the 'hump'. Aimpoints and ACOG's work fine with the proper mount, but while an Eotech will work mounted out front, you might be limited in your ability to quickly make adjustments to it because of where the buttons are located and the 'hump'.

Dave

ETA: If I was going to buy a new rail forend now, I would go with the Larue over the RAS II, with the caveat that its going to either require extra work to mount the Larue or more expense. I prefer the versaility of the Larue w/o the hump. Its not enough of an issue for me to sell my RAS II and replace it with a Larue at this time though.

I like my RAS II.

It has it's place.

Free floats barrel.

Does not require barrel removal and works over Delta Ring.

Is great for Aimpoint using the ARMS 22M38 mount without a spacer. ARMS 40 will co-witness.

TA-31F works with it.

Mine is solid.

Operation Parts had some for like $275, with extras.

YMMV

The RASII is a great piece.  Get one!  I have alot of railed forends and I use it on my bang up gun that is painted and all gouged up.  The RASII has held up perfectly.  The hump is great if you have an aimpoint.

I have two.  Number three may be on the horizon.  I like Aimpoints and ACOGs so no problem for me.

I have two of them, but recently switched one of them from my primary AR to the 9mm SBR AR. I run both of mine with Aimpoints and Troy BUIS. I also have an ACOG in a LaRue mount that works great with the RASII. However, I recently decided that it would be nice to have a real riflescope of higher magnification in a LaRue SPR mount that I could put onto my ARs if I saw the need for a scope (The AR is nothing if not versitile). But, it seems that the LaRue SPR mount is a fraction of an inch too long to fit on the rail between the BUIS and the "hump".
That's too bad.

I bought a shot show special also for $275.  Mounts with a flathead screwdriver and thats it.  Very solid. I twisted on it and couldnt get it to budge.  Very nice

I think they're great.  I'm going to get rid of my last RAS and use it to partially fund another RASII.
Here's one of mine.  Normally I've got a light and CCO on this one, but I wanted to see how well it shot some test loads so I stripped it down.

I'm very happy with mine.  I also got the Shot Show Special.  They're still available in the EE.

Here's a close up for you.

Bump to see if anyone else wants to weigh in...

Anyone think the RAS II is outmoded?

Here's my RASII beauty.  It's one of my favorite AR's.  The RASII is the perfect marriage for the Aimpoint.

I'm still a big fan of the old RAS.  Solid enough for me and no "hump"

Looks like the KAC.

It just depends on whether you use an Aimpoint or EO.

I really like my RAS II w/Aimpoint.  I use a plain ole` RAS with my EO.  As with anything, it just depends on how you plan on using it.

This thread de-railed in a hurry didnt it?

Concerning the RAS II, given the options available today, would you R II owners select the RASII or another? (today)

RAS II
Daniel Defense
Troy
Larue
Samson
MI
Surefire
YMH
ARMS
KAC (other than the II)
on and on

I personally would get the RAS II again...

I'd only use the RASII if your going to mount an Aimpoint.  For that purpose, the RASII has no equal.

i have never used the ras but i have always loved the idea of the freefloat mounting to the upper, helps to keep the rail from torqueing and twisting.

i used the s.i.r. and loved it because of that, the only thing though was that sometimes the raised height of the rail didnt work well with certain optics. that being said like Hokie stated would the the best to use if using an aimpoint.

Since this thread came back from dead I suppose I should give an update.  I bought an RAS II SSS from Operation Parts in the EE and could not be happier.  Shipping was prompt, installation was a breeze and the performance has been just what I wanted.  I'm running a Comp ML2 in a GGG mount and it works great.
