Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Installing the gas block - tight fit?

I built an upper for the first time this weekend.
The gas block (on piece low profile YTM) was tight - it could not slide onto the barrel (even with a little grease). I had to tap it on with a small hammer. The stainless barrel now looks "scratched" because of the block rubbing. I this tightness normal, or should it just slide on by hand?

A tight fit is good to ensure a good gas seal.
Many military FSB's have to be tapped off or on with a mallet.

As long as you didn't do any galling around the gas port area, you are in good shape.
Make very sure that you got the gas port in the barrel well-lined-up with the gas hole in the FSB, so that you get good gas flow.

You should be good to go.

I've seen someone heat up a gas block in the oven first and install it while still hot to get it on easier.   Its a tool, scratches dont hurt the function at all
