Which brand of AR would you choose if the ABC's were not in the running?
Link Posted: 11/2/2004 1:30:03 PM EDT
DPMS. I have one and have had no problems with it.

DPMS. They seem to get a bad rap around here sometimes, but some companies with excellent ratings here like CMMG use DPMS components so they can't be too bad.

OLY.  got two of them one of them throws .223 rounds into a little bundle of about 1/2" at 100yards (5 shot groups) and the other shoots 9mm all day without missing a beat.  My only exposure to DPMS though is the scratchy feeling cast receivers that I have fondled in the gunshops and the parts kit that I installed in a bushy lower that didn't even have a detent to keep it from falling all the way out every freaking time I take the upper down.  Gotta go find a part that shoulda been right to begin with.  Good luck with your purchase!

Are Oly lowers casted or forged?

Actually, does ANYONE make a casted lower these days?

Just wondering, about to pick up a stripper lower from Oly.

RRA.  My personal experiences with Oly and DPMS (products and customer service) have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Oly,18,000+ rounds without any breakages or major malfunctions.  Only company to make all of their own parts in the US and not contract out to a lower bidder.  Besides, I got to fix numerous Bushmasters, RRAs, and Armalites, due to the fact that they couldn't keep up with my little Oly.

RRA.

DPMS , their parts have much better fit and finish and all of mine have been 100% reliable.
I went through ordering 4 barrels from Oly .. all had rust in the chambers and bore with terrible finish quality.
It looked like Oly didn't even bother to rinse and oil after taking them out of the Park tank.
They had cast sight housings and standard GI sight tool would not fit.   The gas port hole was drilled oversize so I didn't even bother.
I then ordered a DPMS barrel and the finish was as good as any of my pre 94 Colts , they were proofmarked and worked perfectly,  the most accurate (at 100 yards) barrel I have is a DPMS M4.

I've only used the DPMS lower parts kits and never once had a problem with any of them.
Many custom builders use DPMS parts, but I don't know of any using Oly.

DPMS over OLY every time.  No contest dude.  You can take any product from any vendor and occasionally get a lemon from any of them but to me the DPMS product is just better than the OLY product.  That is just an apples to apples comparison...not comparing service or parts kits or anything else.

Good luck.

build your own
Link Posted: 11/2/2004 4:18:27 PM EDT
Don't own a DPMS so I can't say, but I have been very happy with my Oly, it was my first AR.
Link Posted: 11/2/2004 4:36:59 PM EDT
Difficult choice,  based on personal experience.

I have a DPMS (mfgr assembled) and my son has an Oly (build). Both have been great performers.
His has been absolutely trouble-free, while mine had some initial gas system issues which DPMS fixed.

Based on that, I'd say OLY.

RRA. I wouldn't bother with DPMS or Oly.
Link Posted: 11/2/2004 7:00:11 PM EDT
I Only shoot OLY and Bushmaster. Never had a problem with either, my Oly is a little more accurate, and I like the finish more. Oly makes their own parts too and give a lifetime warranty. I dont have any experiance with DPMS. But I can vouch for Olympic. I'm convinced people that bash Olympic are mostly repeating some rumor and have never tried their products before.

I will honestly say that I like shooting my bushmaster the most though
Link Posted: 11/2/2004 7:05:31 PM EDT
Oly simply because DPMS has shit for a warranty. Besides that, both are good brands and most of the comments on this board are just parroting what they heard from others. I have an Oly lower and an RRA upper and I can say with confidence that the finish is better on the Oly. That said, both are fine parts and fit great, so regardless of which one you choose, RRA, Oly, or DPMS, you'll get a fine product.

M4Kid- I think that Oly makes both cast and forged lowers. If my memory serves me correctly, the low cost "plinker" they sell comes with a cast lower, but the majority of the rest of their stuff is now forged.

DPMS

Link Posted: 11/2/2004 8:02:10 PM EDT
I cant say about Oly but my DPMS has 1200+ rounds through it without a problem.  They have both cast & forged components available.  Chambers can be had in 223 or 5.56 depending on barrel choice.  My shooting buddy has an RRA that cost about $150 more than my DPMS.  Shooting both side by side shows no visible differences.  Id buy another DPMS without hesitation.

Oly has no cast lowers on any of their rifles. This hasnt been the case for a couple of months now. All forged
