I'm pretty sure some of you guys can identify carriers based on the staking marks on the key....is this a for sure method to identify carriers?  Any one got a list of syles and manufactures?

Can you identify this M16 carrier?

That is how Colt's staked thier carrier keys in the 1960's.   First three carriers on the left are 1960's Colt's, Note some are round, some are square, but in the same place.  Far right is 1970's to current stakes.

Exactamente. Both my early Colt (unmarked) carriers, one chrome smootside, one parked/notched, are round punched in exactly that way.

If it's from the 60's, why is it notched?

The XM16E1 had a forward assit 1964-66.  The M16A1 had a forward assist, 1967-1982.  The M16 and the SP1 had no forward assist, but had the notches from 1968 on.
