Well, after a year and a half with no AR, I broke down and bought my brother's Bushmaster off of him. Being that it's an A1 upper, I figured I'd do a half-assed SP1 clone.....
Got my handguards and grip today ( thanks Mike!!! ).....

This is the first set of early hanguards I've fondled......I like 'em a whole lot better than the round ones. So...........what should I do next?

Thread on a flash supressor and get a lug on that thing.

It looks so neglected without all the evil goodies.

The upper leaves you in a hard spot to go true SP1. Your barrel profile appears HBAR which doesn't lend itself to the SP1 apearance, nor does the presence of the shell case deflector. So I'd give it an A2 F.S. or something more outlandish.

As much as the A1 sights aren't allowed to be easily adjusted, it always amazed me that whenever I'd take out my old SP1, it was always on target. Simple is good.

Sly

ETA: I liked the feel of the old triangular HGs as well.

Looks good.

Thread the barrel.

I'm looking into getting the barrel threaded, I also have an A1 F.H. to go on. Being that it is an HBAR, I know it'll never be a true clone, but I figured I'd try and get as close as I could without spending a fortune. It is a wierd mixture of A1 and A2 parts....and came that way as a factory build.

Thanks for the replies !

Send the upper to ADCO and have the barrel trimmed down to A1 profile and threaded for a FH.

Thread the barrel. You are on a great start.

I'd sell the barrel on the EE and find a used colt pencil or govt profile to replace it with.

Congrats on your first AR!

Though it is a very odd combination...

Thanks, but it's actually my 2nd....

and yes........odd it is....

It's either HBAR or a gov profile (heavy forward of the FSB).

Post-ban HBAR..............stupid ban!

Looks good. I know everyone here will tell you to change this, or change that to make it more authentic, but I say do whatever you want to it. If you want authenticity, then yes, do those things. But if you just want a cool, fun, unique rifle. Do whatever floats your boat.

How did you fit triangular handguards on rings made for round handguards? Thought you have to change those out as well....?

you can use the circle end-caps on the triangle HG's.

Are you talking about the handguard keeper/endcap? If so, it's always been the same on triangle/round HG's for 20" barrels as far as I know.

+1 on ADCO's work. Fast turn around and very inexpensive. You could probably send it to them and have it back before a local shop would be able to get to it. At least that is the way it works where I live.

I got one of those: in PA! Ahhh, the old is new.

I would say to pick up an A1 stock for your next step, they can be found pretty cheap ($10-15).

After that, you can send the barrel to ADCO to get it threaded, or threaded and thinned down.

It doesn't matter what other people like, its your weapon, have fun with it. Tweak doesn't like the look, and carbines with bipods make me want to vomit....we all have our own AR opinions.

I like it. But then again I like anything that goes BANG and sends a bullet out the end. But as the others said, send the upper to Adco and have the barrel turned and threaded, put an A1 hider on it and you'll be doing good.

Looks great, put a flashider on it and shoot
