I was browsing the many moded AR15's in the big pic thread lot of extremely nice weapons you guys have put together it has inspired me to research moding mine.

I noticed this one in particular, with the shotgun mounted an am wondering if it is legal if so where I might find more info on that shotgun mod and mount.

Thanks for any info

As far as I know, as long as the shotgun has a long enough barrel and is long enough overall, it should be legal.  What those numbers are, I can't recall...

The shotgun barrel length  is a minimum of 18 inches I thought and that looks shorter which is why I questioned its legality.

It's much shorter than 18 inches, so it'd be regulated. Probably as an "Any Other Weapon" stamp, since it lacks any kind of stock or grip. Requires an ATF form, but only a $5 fee instead of $200. Like the Serbu Super Shorty.

Isn't it still considered an SBS?

iirc, I believe that kinda setup is a AOW.

look up NFA regulations on Short barrel Shotguns that length would require a tax stamp.

That is a "Master Key" it is made by KAC.  That is under 18" it has a stock and is meant to be fired from the shoulder thus making it a SBS if you removed it from the Rifle and shot it soly in that configuration you could register it as a AOW, being it is attached and meant to be fired the ATF requires it be registered as a SBS.  I already looked into this.  I thought they were cool!  I can't have DD's in my state so a 40mm is out of the question thus leaving me with a 37mm launcher, that I can only fire buck shot out of in the first place!

Thanks, I found their website they are kind of expensive but look very cool and would be a fun mod to do plus like you said I can use it as a standalone as well.

Damn. how does that setup not tear up lowers?  Seems like the takedown pins would be taking a lot of extra stress . . .

Is there any real feedback on the use of this setup? It seems really pointless to me - but I'm no expert.

if you had a setup like the guy in the first predator movie... i think that would was legal length, dont know how effective it is in real life but that guy was a badass

"Masterkey" - means it will open any locked door you want!. I believe our Men and Women Over There are using this setup to "open doors" when no one answers!

Leave it to our friends at KAC to come up with something this clever. Looks very well done indeed!

Why not use a 40MM Hatton round?  I've been told that 1) they make them and 2) they mess people up in a way that the 12 GA Hatton's can only dream about.

I think someone read one of the numerous ARFCOM home defense weapon threads and took the get both motto to heart.

More typically they use a seperate pistol gripped shotgun because this is NOT clever and ruins the balance and utility of the rifle.  Looks cool?  Sure.  A good idea?  Nope.

Masterkey's are used for breaching ops...at least that's what we used them for.

Why would it?  The recoil of an M203 doesn't, and I'd be willing to bet that most 12 GA rounds won't have the recoil of the M203.

Looks like Remington makes there own version of a mountable/standalone shotgun with the ability to convert the shotgun to three styles of standalone's. I am just not sure they would make that available to the general public.

Model 870 Modular Combat Shotgun (MCS).

I like it, and I think it would be a really cool Mod, but I can find better things to spend $1500 on.

Talk about intimidation factor, the look on the burglars face would have to be great when he hears you let the bolt fly closed on the AR AND you rack the shotgun.
That being said, I don't think I'd want to be lugging that thing around much. Somehow I don't think it fits into the "high speed, low drag" concept.

Could you imagine how heavy that would be

Actually, I would not imagine too heavy, certainly not much heavier than a grenade launcher if at all.

This is incorrect.

Once mounted on the M4, the shotgun is considered to have a stock since the M4 has a stock.  Therefore it would be a SBS.
