I've always like the look the XM-177E flash hider but I don't have a need for another AR. However, I am working on putting together a 9mm AR. Since a 9mm AR doesn't need a long bbl (like a 5.56 does) to be effective, I thought it would be cool to have a 9mm AR with the XM-177E look.

I started looking around for 9mm flash hiders and I've only found the A2 style. I did a quick search on Gunbroker and found this:

Cobray M-11 M-10 TEC-9 9mm Deluxe Flash Hider

I'm not worried about the thread size because I would have to have it welded on anyway (no SBRs in Illinois).

Another option would be to get a "slip over" flash hider from DPMS (the .BL-20A) and have it bored out and rethreaded. The only thing I don't know is if they flash hider actually works. Then again, how how flash is there to suppress with a 9mm going down a 16" bbl?

If anyone has any info to share on this, it would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You can use a Model 1 Sales 5.5" XM style flash hider ($12) , cut and thread your RRA arms 9mm barrel to 11.5" and then weld on the flash hider. Building the very same upper for a customer right now....just waiting on RRA to get me some 9mm upper halves.

Thanks for the reply Steve. After thinking about it, that would be easier but I prefer not chopping the bbl so I can swap out the FH for a different version if I so choose to. Still, something to think about. Thank you for the reply.

If your going to permantly attach the FH, then "swapping" will not be an option.

seems like your slip-on idea is the only way to go for you.

Me? I like Steve's idea better.

Well, I'm might be willing to cut the bbl and perm attach the FH. Just something I have to think over.

You can't bore out the slip over flash hiders...they are 1/2" x 28tpi and you need 1/2" x 36tpi...so it's a no go, you will loose the material you need to thread. You best be is to contact Mike @ TSC Machine and have him make what you need for a factory threaded 9mm barrel. I'll post his contact info when I find it on my messy desk, I know it's on here somewhere.

Steve.

So the interior of this flash hider is wide open, correct? I'm basing that upon the fact that you didn't mention anything about modifiying the FH. I just want to make sure I get all my facts straight. I would like to go this route myself.

Thank you.
