I've heard a brass rod works on the FS with the sharp edges.
 What about strap wrenches?

Mine has two flat spots 180 degrees from each other on the back "rim" of the device. You must have either a defect or something. Is it old? Maybe the older ones don't have flats.

if it has no flat spot, i would take a approriate sized srewdriver and insert it through the open slots in the FH. use the screwdriver as a leverage to crank the FH tight on the barrel. maybe even duck tape the screw driver so it doesn't damage the finish.
Take some peel washer and make sure your open slots are positioned at 2,4,7,11 o'clock. those slots are suppose to be on either side of the front sight post. |

The question to me is, were Phantoms produced by YHM without flat spots?

Not to say that there NEVER was one made without flat spots, but I've had a dozen or so go through my hands (still have 3 or 4 in the basement) and they all had the flats for a wrench.

Which style did you get? There the original 4 slot YHM-28, the new 5 slot 5C1 & 5C2 and the Bushmaster exclusive 5 slot YHM-29. Here are pics of the 5C1, 5C2 & 28 variants -
5C1 -  5C2 -  YHM-28 on the rifle If it doesn't have flats I would think it's a fluke, I haven't heard of anyone copying the Phantoms. |

No flat spot.
I'll post a hypothetical drawing of what it would look like if I had it before a certain date. it has 4 slots/openings, and is perfectly round around the base. It looks just like the top right picture you showed. |

There ARE cast copies of the Phantom around, but the ones that I've seen are copies of the old 4-slot with the notches in front.
