I have a new Bushmaster Modular Carbine on order that should be here any day now, and I’m trying to decide on a scope for it. So far, I’m leaning towards either Aimpoint CompM2/CompML2, or Trijicon TA11/TA31. The carbine has A3 flattop with flip-up front and rear iron sights, and no handle. My question is, will I be able to mount either ACOG or Aimpoint in a way where I’ll be able to use both scope and iron sights at the same time? Flipping iron sights up and down is not a big deal, I can live with it, but I don’t want to have to remove the scope to be able to use sights (if at all possible). Or should I buy a carry handle and mount a scope on it? Would I still be able to use my flip-up iron sights with the handle?
Thank you,

you can use flip up irons with the Aimpoint (read that should). With the ACOG you cant. Thats why I like the ARMS 19S with the throw lever mount: The Aimpoint is in an ARMS 22M68 Extended. The Aimpoint works better for me indoors and is fine out to 200yards or so. The ACOG makes a better general purpose long range scope that can do just fine at close range with the BAC.

So, are you saying that once I install ACOG TA11/31 I should forget about using irons (unless I remove the scope)?

You dont have much choice. The ACOG will require it to be to the rear of the reciever covering the back up irons. If you want the ACOG AND irons, you'll have to mount it on top of a carry handle.

I see... Well, since my Bushmaster doesn't come with a carry handle, should I buy one and use it to mount ACOG (and I guess the handle will replace my rear flip-up sight)? Or should I mount it lower with just an "A3 adapter"? I always thought that the closer optic/sight to bore axis is the better, but I also read that TA11/31 was specifically DESIGNED to be installed on a carry handle. I most likely will end up getting ACOG, but may get Aimpoint instead if I find a good deal on it.

Id prefer it on the reciever for those reasons. With a high quality optic like the ACOG, your back up irons are going to be just that...back up.

Lumpy196, thank you for your help. You're right about irons being back-up sights only, I was just hoping to be able to practice with them every now and then without having to remove the scope. I'd like to be as good with irons as with a scope (well, not really, but you know what I mean). One more question, if you don't mind... Will ARMS 22M68 Extended work for ACOG TA11/31? Or is it for Aimpoint only? Thanks, Alex.

My TA31 is going to end up on a 20" Gov't weight flat top as soon as Im done collecting the parts. I dont plan on mounting the BUIS, so I can take it off and put the carry handle on and maintain my iron sight proficiency when I want to. I dont think an immediate use BUIS is such an issue with a tough optic like the ACOGs.
