I typically clean each time I go shooting.  But I've heard that doing so is unnecessary and may even be detrimental (over-cleaning).  What do you guys think?  Thanks.

I usually clean the bolt group completely, brush the chamber and run a patch or two down the barrel after shooting.

By the 3rd time putting rounds through it, I give it a complete cleaning.

It also depends on how much dust it got covered in.

Ditto.

Of course all this is dependant on how many rounds I put through it when I go shooting.

If I shoot 30 rounds I just brush the bolt group and run a patch down the tube.

If I shoot 300 or more it get's a good cleaning.

Copper solvent every 1K rounds or so.
