How many rounds have you put through your AR? (What Brand?)

How is the overall condition compared to when you first bought it?

And how often do you shoot it?

Anyone broke 10,000 yet?
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 7:44:07 PM EST
Olympic all factory built M4 like substance. Bought it about 18 mos ago.

Best estimate is 20-23,000 rounds. I shoot the crap out of it. Only problems: One broken bolt and several hammer pins. Still shoots great but the barrel is going soon. It needs more evil stuff anyway.

BTW, when I talked to the OLY rep at the last SHOT show, he gave me a new bolt for a spare.

Oh I think you will find MANY here who have put 10,000 thru.

My bushmaster M4 has the most, I would just guess 8000-9000 rounds.

Still looks like it did when I built it..... a few little dings/scratches, and a place on the bbl where my case melted into it when I set it down too hot once.

Shoot it about once every two months or so.

rickinvegas,

What broke on the bolt?
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 7:57:44 PM EST
6000ish and it's still running flawlessly. I just recently put on a new barrel though.

14,840 though a ArmaLite M15A2, still shoots like a dream.

The only thing I have replaced are the gas rings to a 1 piece McFarland gas ring

Oh I forgot to mention, I finally cleaned it too

How do you people keep such accurate round counts? Obsessive compulsive?

Because I usually shoot it like this

The 17,538th round broke it. The bolt cracked at the cam pin hole. Just a note, the extractor is still the original and I shoot Wolf 90% of the time. (the extractor on the replacement bolt broke after just 500 rounds so I just put back the one from the broken bolt. I forgot the maker but it wasn't OLY)

Hey rick, what brake is that? Very effective!

Is that "AR" singular? Like only one?

It must such to be a POOR_MAN.

It's the stock uglyass OLY brake. Because Olympic barrels are a unique diameter, I never changed it. It does work well but is almost as loud as the Y-Comp. Very annoying.

Hence the name,

I going to order another lower next week.

I guess I should have asked what ammo do you typically use?
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 9:06:03 PM EST
Maybe 1000 rounds

Log Book,

I wanted to see first hand on how many rounds can go thgrough a chrome lined barrel before it is trash.
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 9:09:01 PM EST
2k through one, 250 through the other. I figure I only have 10k through ARs total. Lots of different setups though.
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 9:57:54 PM EST
I don't know.
Link Posted: 9/27/2004 10:07:30 PM EST
I've got 655 through mine so far.

I keep track of all my outings, recording both the number of rounds fired (and brand, lot, load, etc.) and any problems I may have encountered.

I've put about 550rds through my DPMS 16" CAR. It shoots just as good as the first day I fired my first round through it. I have had only two small problems which could have been related to me. First was a round that wouldn't fire that was chambered and the second was a round that got jammed when chambering. I usually go to the range once a week or to my friends house who has 30acres of land.

My low count AR's are near or over 10,000 . My first was a 20" A2 Oly that had well over 50,000
when I sold it . With 30 round mags it isn't hard burn through 500+ rounds in a day of shooting .
Times that by 52 if you only shoot once a week per year and it adds up quick .

ETA

The Oly still looked 90-95% when I sold it and accuracy was about the same as it was when new .

I have a log Data book . I have a page for allmy rifles. I log Date shot. Number of rounds fired. Any adjustments I might have done to the rifle. And list any Failures that might have happened,FTF, FTE, ECT... Ammo manufactor...It failure happens and can't be solved. Not many of those..
But I did have a Mas 49/56 that I traced back to the LOT # of ammo I was useing during the FTE . Sent all that back and got another lot. It don't ake but a minutet or two to log your days shooting down. That way I can keep up with round counts and failures... I have anough guns I rotate them from the Vault..... WarDawg

I had a BM that I put 5,000 + through. I am working on my M-4gery right now. About 500 rds. last weekend. My TDY pay just came in so I am thinking about 700+ this weekend.

I just realized that I put more rounds down range in one outing than many of you have in years.

Only 1500, roughly.

College budget = pain.

I log my shooting too, so I have a somewhat accurate count.

The problem is that ARs are so modular that getting an accurate round count is tough. In my log I show it as 5k rounds on the lower; but the truth is that I have replaced practically every part on it so each part has a slightly different round count. Some of the parts (like the bolt and barrel) on the gun are from an older AR and have a higher round count. Some of the parts (like the upper) are only a few years old and have less.

In order to get a more accurate count, I've started logging recently based on bolt and barrel rather than the serial number of the lower; but the older data is still off so I only have an approximate count overall.

That's what you get when it is so easy to swap out uppers, lowers etc.

Colt 20" HBAR bought new in January 1991- a SWAG would be +\- 2,000 rounds.
Colt 16" Gov't Carbine bought new in June 1995- another SWAG would be about +\- 1,500 rounds.
In other words, not nearly enough shooting. They both look as good as they did the day I bought them, except for a little wear on the FS and FA on the HBAR.

I have no idea.

1100 thru my rra. Changed barrels though because of the ban so I could get a bayo lug and a FS.

This is why I log the date of the outing, plus the date and type of work performed whenever I change something. I also number my uppers and include which was used for how many rounds in the outing data. I also log cleanings in case I screw something up in reassembly, so I can trace the problem.

Colt - roughly 200 rounds.

Bushmaster - roughly 1000 rounds.

Beats the hell out of me... I never keep count of rounds.
