What does everyone think an appropriate number of AR15 rifles and receivers is to have for a three generation supply?

Currently I have 6 complete, 4 stripped.

I think 11 complete rifles and 10 more receivers for a total of 21 should be a decent stock of AR15s. What do you guys think?
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 6:32:04 PM EST
you can never have too many.

How about 87?
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 6:37:32 PM EST
I know EXACTLY how many is enough.....

...just ONE more!
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 6:43:02 PM EST
1 is enough for me...
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 6:43:47 PM EST
The world may never know....

... silly question.
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 6:49:53 PM EST
how in the hell would you have time to shoot 11 complete rifles let alone 87? im speaking out of jealousy of course. my vote is for 5... or wait 6 is nice and round... mabe 8, but if i had 20 i could build all sorts of variants
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 7:00:12 PM EST
Well, I got one because..., and then I got another different one, and now I've got 5 and, well, actually 5½ as I've got a spare upper. But that ½ kind of bugs me - you know, there's this assymetry in the gun safe.

But no sweat, I've got a lower ordered. Of course, I've got another upper on order, too, so that's still going to leave me with an unwed ½.

Hmm....
Link Posted: 9/13/2007 7:03:35 PM EST
There are never enough. Every time you get one weapon built, you think of another configuration.

There is no better answer than this one

Still have not found the MAGIC NUMBER...........four stripped uppers and lowers sitting in the safe.

Link Posted: 9/14/2007 7:26:17 PM EST
I'm probably going to pick up 1 more lower...that will make 4 lowers in my collection. 2 with A2 stocks and 2 with carbine stocks. only 1 is a complete rifle at the moment though....

Here's my list of what I think I want

1 m16a4 clone
2 SPR/SDM/SAM-R variant of my own design
3 16" HBAR carbine (my only complete rifle at the moment) may turn into a RECON
4 10.5 SBR

That covers your long range, your CQB NFA item, your CQB non NFA item, and your close to classic AR15 (I'd only need a new upper for an A2 clone...but I'd not likely use one of the two uppers).

As it is I think I'd probably find one of those four as my favorite and shoot the others a lot less. Really you could get away with 2 complete lowers and multiple uppers since the AR platform is very modular. But really lowers are pretty cheap and it's extra assurance if one breaks.
Link Posted: 9/14/2007 7:31:06 PM EST
Lowers are freaking cheap if you think about it.

I would say 5 complete, 5 stripped would ensure your childrens children at least have the means to resist. Of course, if you're that worried about future generations, training is more important in the great scheme of thing... with children as it is with equipment.

I've got one.
With the way ammo prices are going, I don't see the point in building more.

Its like ammo too much is never enough.I shoot when I can afford it as I wont go into my ammo stash that thankfully I put together a couple years ago...all my buddies ribbed me about how much I stashed away but their not laughing now

Since I only shoot one at a time, ammo price doesn't come into play.

I agree. I guess the way I look at it is that I have the extras for parts or as invested funds incase a ban comes back.

Well, in a SHTF scenario, you can arm all your friends and family as well. Easier to hold off the zombies.
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 5:20:15 PM EST
in response to the comment about zombies above......we either need to find a source or make them ourselves so we can start taking care of them....*drools* dream scenario

One more.
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 6:32:07 PM EST
I've got five and thought I was good. Now I got an idea of how i'd like to have a 6th one set up. It never ends.
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 7:03:23 PM EST
An even dozen. No need for it to end.

42

More than what I have.
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 9:04:14 PM EST
two: 1 5.56 m4gery with mildot sight and 1 long range 7.62 nato 24" barrel, leupold scope, bipod, and a few other goodies
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 9:54:23 PM EST
why just AR-15s?
Link Posted: 9/15/2007 9:59:05 PM EST
Currently I won a stock Bushy 16" with an A2 upper. I want to do a flattop 10.5 SBR and I will be set for a little while.

Arsenal building ... Another great American sport..

Link Posted: 9/16/2007 12:09:41 AM EST
I have not yet reached the point where i have enough ARs
Link Posted: 9/16/2007 6:23:40 AM EST
Two complete lower receivers...

Unlimited number of upper receivers...

Repair or replace as needed...
Link Posted: 9/16/2007 4:16:26 PM EST
I would say you should have at least 2. If you had only 1 and it broke you would be SOL. I rarely shoot but if the SHTF I feel much better knowing I have two rifles in case one breaks. 5 or 6 would be nice but for me they would just sit unused until I died. I have other hobbies I can use the money for. Just my .02.

Are you into anything else? That many AR's seems like a one-dimensional collection. But hey, if you like 'em, have at it.

How many Ar's and receivers are available ?

I think this is a rhetorical qustion. As many as you want to buy is a good number.
Link Posted: 9/16/2007 5:41:41 PM EST
I think its silly to buy for 3 generations. I know 1 guy personally who recieved an armory from his dad. he sold it all because he & his wife hates guns. your kids & grandkids may sell ur collection at a huge loss (to you). u'll be turning in ur grave ;-)

1 AR is enuff for me. only other AR I could possibly want is a piston upper. otherwise they are all the same AKs on the other hand...

Yes, I am. I am talking in addition to the rest of the collection.

No collection is complete without a rack full of M1 Garands...... I don't really like AKs, so what else is there, that isn't NFA?

Not that I have one.... yet

How about some M14s, FALs, and some .50s
Link Posted: 9/16/2007 6:24:46 PM EST
I can't afford to be a collector and a shooter. I can do one or the other, not both. So for me, I'd be good with two given my finances. The whole two is one, one is none rule. Anything else would go towards ammo. Right now I am still in the one is none mode.

I would hope that folks with 6-10 AR have as many training classes under their belts as well but it is your money.

With the house that psycho built, who knows whats in the yard.

Sarah Winchester's Spirit guide told her to keep building and adding to the house to keep the spirits "confused" and so they couldn't find her to kill her. The spirit guide blamed her husband for all the guns he sold and the use in the wars and battles.

So the paranoid psycho built a messed up house with doors that lead into walls and stairs that go in cirlces to nowhere.

it's quite interesting.

1 more.

I'll have an even dozen then.
