Can I just drop the boxes in an ammo can and leave them in the closet? Or do I have to prepare the ammo for long term storage?

Check out "The Oracle" to get a complete lowdown on how to store ammo.  Just click here and look under "How do I store ammo properly?".

If you don't feel like looking up the info, all you have to do is decide whether you want to store the ammo on stripper clips, on stripper clips in bandoleers, or loaded in mags.  Whatever you decide to do don't forget to toss in a dessicant pack. Stick all this in an ammo can and place said can in area that doesn't exceed 80 degrees and your ammo should last for decades!

Good luck.

Properly stored that ammo will fire well after you are dust.  See: Q. How do I store ammo properly?

What is this "storing" you're discussing?

I understand the term to mean "to keep for a period of time, to stow, to save", and that puzzles me as my ammo spend more time in the air (brass ejecting, bullet flying, powder smoke floating) than it does in the shipping container.

;)

For a dessicant try using the super premium unsented Kitty Litter in a cotton sock.
