I recall reading somewhere that this is done by vaporizing a thin chrome wire that is suspended down the center of the bore.

That's decorative chrome, a common misconception.
Decorative chrome is a multistep process. Usually nickle plate over a flash of copper, and finally a trivalent (soft) chrome finish, buffed in between. Hard chrome is a different animal entirely. |
