What brands of ammo are good for home defense?  I am not looking for the "perfect" round.  Just something reliable, consistent, and effective.  Please give me specific brands, weights, bullet styles, model numbers, etc. if you can.  Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated.

I like the 230 gr Remington Golden Sabers in 45 ACP myself. I wouldn't argue with 00 Buck either though.

Greeting knightone.

Since your query is posted to the "Ammunition" forum of AR15.com, I assume you are referring to an AR15 home defense round.  I've been fortunate enough to not ever have had to send any round(s) (pistol, shotgun, AR) down a hall of my home, so I cannot make a recommendation based on personal experience.  I would think that there are many posts here at AR15 covering your query; the ammo oracle, for instance, offers some great information about .223 ammunition related to this application (Hornady TAP, etc.).

Personally, given a choice based on some training I did receive in the military and out, I would reach under my bed for my Mossberg 590 9-shot loaded with 2 3/4" Federal low-recoil, 9 pellet 00 buckshot (equipped with the invaluable, IMO, M6 Tactical Illuminator) every time over my Bushmaster Dissipator loaded with many LC 55gr. and even, perhaps, over my Browning Hi-Power with 115 gr. Cor-Bon.  Hard to imagine beating the stopping power of nine, appx. 8mm steel balls impacting a well-illuminated/lasered target within a 10" radius (average) at 25 yards (thank you Vang Comp).  I look forward to reading other's suggestions.

Rem. Golden Sabres, Cor-Bon, Winchester RANGER SXT, Federal Hydra-Shok, Speed Gold dot...

Shoot what functions the best and is most accurate from your particular weapon. You wont go wrong with any of these brands.

Thanks, for the suggestions, guys.  However, I did fail to mention i wanted ammunition for my AR.  I have used both golden sabres and hydra-shoks in 230 grain.  they function well and no doubt would be good in a defensive situation.  However, I need defensive ammo for my rifle.  Is there anything better than M193 ball?  Does M193 work well at close ranges less than 50 feet?  If not, what does?

Now that you specified .223 ammunition, I can't think of anything better than Federal Lake City XM193 55 grain that would meet your requirements above.  See the AR15 Ammo FAQ and you will understand why.

The ammo faq says Lake City no longer produces 193 for the civilian market.  Where is a good source that still has XM193 available to civvies?

AR15fan, Why do you use TAP at home if you use softpoints at work?  Why not use SP's in your HD rifle?
