Hello, I have a couple questions. hopefully someone can help me out.

A local gunstore is selling a bushmaster ar15 fixed stock, with a 20" barrel for 730 bucks.
They're also selling a 16" collapsable stock for 880. I'd rather have the 16", just because its lighter. I'm also willing to save a couple bucks by getting the 20"  Would it be too difficult to put an attatchable stock on the 20" rifle. Or would I be better off just getting the 16"? I dont need an extra 4" in terms of accuracy, as this will be my first rifle, and I just want to learn/have fun.  thanks for any/all input!

(I'm also considering getting a 1911 from springfield/smith and wesson, or kimber, but I'm pretty set on getting an AR-15. I dont think I'll change my mind)

You can change the stock with no problem, the collapsible will run you around $70-100, in this situation I would go with the carbine hands down. Before you buy visit this site and get a quote.

welcome, ttemper

those are decent prices all right, but bear in mind the A2 versions are generally 100 or so less than the preferred A3 (flat top) models.

and for good reason. 80+% of AR  buyers are getting the A3 so that they have more options available to them. Similar numbers are choosing the 16" over the 20's anymore (for a first AR that is)

Knesekguns.com is a good lead, by the way

Good luck
