I'm planning a Light weight upper build with a Vltor MUR Billet upper 16" midlength gas tube and rifle length FF tube like the VTac extreme or Apex.  The question is the barrel.

-Noveske Recon 16" SS with polygonal rifling

     -DD 16" Light Weight CHF

-or I could just buy a Noveske N4 Recce Low profile upper to get all the parts (upper, sights, N4 barrel) and switch out the rail for the FF tube.

I know the DD would probably be the lightest weight but would the Noveske make up up for the small extra weight with vast improvements in accuracy?

Will Noveske ever sell the 16" N4 barrel by itself?

Can you use a Magpul BAD lever with the Vltor upper?

Considering Battle Comp but what other comps are good?

Thanks guys

Does anyone have any opinions?  I just wanted to see if there is a $100 difference in the two brands.

Rainier Arms sells the Noveske 10.5" & 14.5" N4 light barrels.  Might want to check with them to see if they can get you a 16".

Also the Noveske chrome lined barrels have shown to be the most accurate chrome lined barrels.

The stainless steel Noveske will most likely be a decent bit heavier then the alternatives.

In my opinion your light weight upper plans will not be that light weight with the parts you are planning on.

I'm guessing the stainless barrels are too heavy to be considered for a LW upper. What else is heavy about this upper? I know the Vtac tube is light even in rifle length. Is the MUR that much heavier than a regular upper? I just thought it looked cool.

At Pat: would using a regular forged upper and non stainless barrel make it LW?

It all depends on what parts you pick honestly, and depends on what how LW you want it to be. Personally i would use a regular forged upper, and would not think of using a SS barrel. I am not trying to put your build down or put you on the spot at all so I hope you didnt think i was calling you out.

The Vtac handguards are light for sure, i just got a set in and think its a very well made peice of gear. I also like the apex, and have been looking for an excuse to put a set on some build, but i cant figure out what yet. There are some doing LW builds that are aiming for the LIGHTEST weight they can get, and the only handguard that will work for them is a custom carbon freefloat tube. These are the same guys that will find a slick side forge upper and possibly even mill it more, and only use a pencil barrel. So i mean there are different levels of LW builds, and you need to figure out how light you want to go, and also what use the gun will be seeing.

Some people say that pencil barrels are not the best for live fire course where alot of rounds are sent down range quickly because the barrel heats up fast.

If you let us know to what point you want to take the LW aspect we can certianly guide you in which way to go. I suspect for what you are after a nice non ss barrel with a good medium or light weight contour will be great, along with the Vtac tube will be great.

To aress other aspects of your original post that i missed before, I have heard nothing but great things about the battle comp, and from those reviews have ordred two for myself. I havent had a chance to blast with them on yet so i cant comment on them any more than the machining and finish is great.

The PWS 556 is another one that is supposed to be good, and then there are many other full on comps that may work better yet, but also are a pain to shoot with literally due to the concussion blast out the sides. There are some threads on comps a few pages back in the rifles uppers lowers and more sub forum below this. I would suggest looking through the first 5 or 10 pages of that for some threads that may have answers on the comps.

As far as the bad lever i dont belive it works with the mur, but dont hold me to that. It may have been billet lowers it didnt work with and not uppers. Hopefully someone will come along and be able to answer that for you

I didn't take your remarks harshly at all Pat, I should have been more clear about what extreme I want to take the weight savings to.

I handled a friends recent build that was pretty much a standard midlength DD barrel with VTac extreme and Aimpoint micro.  I know that probably isn't light weight to most people here, but I was very impressed at how light it felt compared to my LMT 10.5"

I know I could get much lighter with a cav arms lower, and carbon tubes etc, but I feel that the N4 barrel, Centurion, or DD LW barrel would be good with the Apex FF tube.

I know it would be longer weight distribultion so I am also considering the UBR or LMT stock to balance the weight.

This would be used for local carbine matches with a micro Aimpoint, occasional 3 gun matches and medium range target shooting both with a 1-4x scope.

I really appreciate yalls input.  Its has been helpful especially about the differences in barrels.

No problem. Glad I could help. MSTN are good people. Get with Wes.  His builds are second to none.
