I have a Doublestar AR.  When I bought the rifle mags always clicked right in, bolt open or closed.  After my last range trip, I broke the rifle down and cleaned it like I normally would.  Since then, I have to smack the bottom of the mags pretty hard to get them to seat.  I haven't fired the rifle since.  Any clues to what I may have done while having the gun apart or anything else that may cause this?

There may be some dirt in the magazine catch that's causing it to drag.

Are the mags fully loaded or downloaded? I always have a problem w/ fully loaded mags.

I'm pretty rough on mags when reloading.  What do you consider a hard smack?  Out of all the complaints I've encountered of "hard to seat mags", it was usually someone who was afraid to be rough with mag changes.

Before anybody jumps on me, this is just my experience.  I'm more of the mind that there is not a set amount of force that it SHOULD take to seat a fully loaded, closed bolt mag.  Either you do or you don't and you're not going to break the rifle or mag with your hand so smack the crap out of it.

If there might be some debris in the mag catch just remove it and run a brush through the button way and catch slot and reassemble with some oil or a touch of grease.

All of my mags are fully loaded.  I've never downloaded a mag and I think it's silly to do so.  The rifle has at most, 700 rounds through it.  When new, a loaded mag would push right in on a closed bolt and click with little to no force.

At the range, mag changes were easy, as they had been.  It wasn't until after breakdown/cleaning that the problem occurred.  It does not matter if the bolt is open or closed, I have to smack the mags pretty hard to get them to seat.  I'm not afraid of damaging a mag or the rifle, however I know this isn't normal.

I will check for dirt/debris in the mag catch.

With the bolt closed it should take a fair bit of force to seat a fully loaded 30 round magazine. Is it possible you are confusing loading on an open bolt to loading on a closed bolt?

seating a fully loaded 30 round GI mag takes a pretty good push. downloading is an accepted practice, or switch over to pmags

I have about 50/50 PMag and USGI stash.  All mags, 5, 20, and 30 PMag/USGI do the same thing.

No sir.  As I stated above, the mags are currently hard to seat whether the bolt is open or closed.

how far do you have your mag catch screwed in? the threaded section should just barely sit below the face of button.

Better questions,

Are these the same mags that you have been using all along, or have you bought new mags, and they have not self mated yet.

Also, when was the last time that you not only pulled the mags down to clean the, but pulled the mag catch assembly out of the rifle to clean those parts as well.

The mags are a snap to pull down and CLP, and on the catch, a pencil to push the mag release button in all the way, allows the mag catch assembly to be spin off.

The mags have never been cleaned.   Being I have shot less than 700 rounds through the rifle (first and only AR), I doubt any of the magazines have seen more than 90 rounds through them.  The only new mags are the 5 rounders.  I carry them to deer hunt.  I will however remove the mag catch and clean.  Thank you for your replies fellas.

Does the mag release feel odd when pushing it like to drop a mag?
I would do as stated above and pull it out and check it out. Maybe stick the spring in the other end 1st...just for fun, and if it fixes its self, flip the spring over again and if it UNfixes its self, replace spring. You said its with more than 1 mag so it HAS to be the catch or spring.. ot the bcg is upside down

Try this, split the upper and lower, tehn insert your mags.  Is there a diffrence?
Try inserting MT mags, is there a difference?

Went to mess with the rifle last night and they push in like normal again.  I must have had a piece of debris in there somewhere.  Anyhow, still took it apart and cleaned it up.  Thanks for the help fellas.
