Ever wonder why Ed and crew don't have a place here??  I have bought from them before, and I was happy with the parts.  I would never buy from them again due to the crap they got into with others on the site.  Also, most places have to really work to get a 10" upper to work.  I would have hesitations about an 8" upper.

I won't get into politics of GSE, but I think you are comparing apples to oranges.
A 10" barreled upper with a carbine length gas system is certainly a poor plan.
However, an 8" barreled upper with a pistol length gas system is certainly acceptable.
More info on gas system lengths is here as you don't seem to be aware of the differences.

I have made some 6.5" barrels with pistol gas systems and they run great.
8" barrel would even have more dwell time and runs a smaller diameter gas port.
