[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Got My first AR :) Need Recommendations on Accessories

After a long local search, I came across this weapon used but like new with some Parson mags and a bag. Is there anything I should get before I get out to the range this weekend and zero. What targets and ammo do you guys recommend, this has a 16" bbl with a 1:9 twist.

Clean and lube it, then go shooting and sight it in.

What type of shooting do you plan on doing? Its hard to make a recommendation without knowing your plans.

I would eventually like to compete, but not sure if this rifle is up to it or if there's any clubs or match type shooting in the area. Off the bat, get it sighted in at 100 yards and have an accurate rifle for SHTF. I do know the closest range over 100 yards is 2 hours away, there's a 25/50/100 about an hour away, so I have to be prepared before I go.

Thanks for the reply, opened my eyes, I have research to do, and never excelled at long-term planning.

EDIT: I read that I posted this rifle may not be up to it...silly, I might not be up to it though I was consistent Expert w/M-16 in the military but haven't qualified in years before I just qualified for the reserves 2 months ago and barely qualified as Sharpshooter.

Accessories: Bullets would be a great start, lots of them.

In the future, send that barrel off to ADCO. They will fix it for you.

If you have big hands (I do) a First Samco will extend the length of pull on it, which makes a tremendous difference in ease of trigger pull. That is the only bling I have on my Colt. Maybe start saving for an ACOG.

I inspected and lubed it within a half-hour of getting it home. The rifle was spotless--no carbon could be rubbed off anywhere. Has very faint friction marks on the bottom of the carrier only, Spooky in a good way.

A few mags, case of ammo , collapsible stock (If you want one)

Send the upper to these guys---> www.adcofirearms.com/ ,
and get a decent Flash Suppresor put on - Plain Barrels SUCK in dim light.

If you only do bench work, keep that stock. If you plan on training, or doing CQB style drills, an adustable stock may work better for you.

Cheaper is better. Ammo is starting to get scarce. Head over to Wal-Mart and get some White box 40 round value packs of 55 grain. Approx $7.75ea. Get at least a case.

I run Wolf, XM193, and IMI through my Colt.

Don't waste money on match ammo. It isn't a match rifle, regardless of the propaganda roll marked on the lower receiver.

You guys are quick...

I have smaller hands LOP, etc. feels just right as-is. Stock feels as good as any of the adjustables I've tried.

Will be picking up a GI Cleaning kit and a case of WWB...

You seem to be just getting started and SHTF rediness isn't the first thing on your list. but when you do start getting your rifle ready for it, I would suggest you invest in many magazines. I like the D&H GI 30 rounders. These can be had for a good price at Bravo Company USA or 44mag.com.

Red dot optics are really nice too. I have an Eotech 552 on mine, but the Aimpoint is really good too.

clasky, yeah as far as owning an AR, I am definitely just getting started. I have 5 30-rounders, if they function well, think I'll need more?

My research is focusing on the lower forums , optics, mags, and ammo.

You can't have too many mags. As they are very cheap now. Cheaper than they've been since I was a kid, I'd get as many as I could now. Keep checking in the Mag forum for updates on function of certain mags and low prices.

Another reason to buy more mags is that nobody knows what the political climate holds in the future. We may end up with another Clinton-type president who will outlaw the sale of these evil mags. Stock up now because who knows how long we will be able to buy them.

Another important thing to remember is to test every mag you own. Take them to range and make sure you work any bugs out of them.

Out of all the things I purchased for my AR,the best has to be the cheapest,a Hogue or G27 grip.It gives a whole new feel to the rifle and after getting it,I was pissed I waited so long to do so.

The Hogue has the better grip,rubber type.the G27 is more comfortable.If someone would combine the 2 features of these,I would have the perfect grip.

I wouldn't shoot shit ammo out of that beauty. I personally like Black Hills Blue Box. I got a case of 1000 during the Christmas season.

Fulton Armory = Case of 1000 $264.95

Yeah's it's pricey for reloads but it's very high quality stuff. No short-stroking issues, or failures, and it's just dead on accurate.

Check the Ammo Price List when you get a chance.

Thanks guys, I will look into the grips, who makes the G27? I've always used Pachmyr grips for handguns. Also, I went to two different Wal Marts and they're wiped clean of the WWB ...I bought the last 4 boxes of UMC 55 gr. at one store and Meijer's had steel cased Wolf for $3.49 per box. I had to buy a few. I have the 50 rd. box of Remanufactured Ultramax 55. gr that came with the rifle but the rounds look pretty inconsistent from round to round, the brass is dinged up--not pretty. Made in South Dakota, wonder if their related to Black Hills.

I'm looking for the 25-yard zero targets that have the click adjustments on them like the Army uses --any leads is appreciated.

Heh, TheMocoMan is saying the oppositie of wildearp in regards to ammo. Thanks for the good word and the link for ammo prices.

By the way, this isn't a "cheap" hobby, is it? lol

Cheap is not a word I like to use, even in this case, jest. I don't want my interests to be cheap per se, just manageable, because I can go a little crazy when getting into something. I'm really enjoying the optrions and the reading, and it all comes to head pulling up to the range. This is the first firearm in a long time that I've really gotten all excited about.
