I like S&W stuff.  I think the only possible complaint about the M&P10 in particular is its somewhat proprietary barrel deal and the fact that S&W won't sell you a barrel outright like many/most of the other companies with big caliber AR's.

Yeah, I think that is definitely a black eye.

From some of the things that I have read, this might be changing soon, but to roll out a product without at least an idea of how to assist your customers if a part needs replaced is silly.

Great article, thanks for the link.  The M&P10 was my primary choice for a .308 caliber AR but the proprietary barrel and inability to replace it is a 100% deal killer to me.

I read that the barrel can be replaced, but the bcg must be replaced as well, and the gas tube is slighty different than mid length.

=( Seems really great otherwise

I picked up this same model from Buds last month to replace a Sig 716. I more than impressed with it. First thing is the trigger, in its stock form it's as smooth as an ALG ATC trigger group. Next is the fit an finish, no flaws at all.  I put a leupold AR 3x9 Firedot on it and went to the range. My first stop was the 50 to get on paper and get a zero. I was able to shoot clothes pins off the target backer with ZQI FMJ ammo. I moved to the 100 line and wa able to get right 2" groups with the ZQI and slightly under with Federal XM80. I let the gun cool down and did some BSing with some other shooters and then loaded some FGGM 168 and shot thee separate >1" groups. Let the barrel cool some more and loaded some PPU 175 match and they were all touching. My next range trip I heated to my deer lease, I was able to set up and shot to 450 yards. Now I now I need a bipod and some bags for a rest. I went prone in the bed of my truck and using my backpack as a rest and rolled up a rain coat as an stock support I was able to put every round on a 8" gong using the ZQI, Got in rush and forgot all my match ammo.
I am more than impressed with the M&P 10. Like I said it replaced a Sig 716. That thing was an boat anchor and would Only shoot match ammo with any concistancy, I'd rather have a gun that will shoot any thing with a reasonable expectation of accuracy than a gun that will only shoot match ammo.
I've got my eyes on the Adams Arms 308 but waiting on some more range reports.

From what I've read, it can be replaced but it's not a simply barrel swap like other guns, it requires "smithin".  There's a thread on here where a member went through hell with S&W because they told him they don't sell barrels and if he wanted his gun fixed he had to purchase a new upper.  I love S&W's other products but unless they have made a 180 degree flip in M&P10 policy, there's no way I'll buy one.

Yeah, that would be me.  The rifle shot well (until it blew up), but after the experience I have gone through with S&W customer service, there is no way I will ever buy a rifle from them again, or recommend that anyone else do so.  If I ever get my repaired rifle back from them, I plan on selling it and buying an Armalite.

Before buying a S&W 308 AR one should research thoroughly.

My brother has one and he's been plagued with a bunch of problems from magazine fit to bolt hold-open to stuck cases in the chamber to gas port size. The rough chamber had to be gunsmithed as was the gas port/gas block problem. I'm not sure if the mag fit issue has been resolved.

Bottom line: he's so sorry he ever bought it. Luckily he works for a large gunshop and a smith fixed the barrel issues as a favor.

The weight/balance seemed great even to me but as soon as scope, sling and loaded mag were added it turned into one heavy sow.

I had most of those issues as well.  It has a tighter mag well than DPMS-pattern rifles, so my C-products mags, which ran fine in my DPMS, would not fit.  That required me to go out and buy new mags.  It makes you wonder what other mags might not work in it.  My rifle also had an undersized gas port from the factory, which caused very frequent failure to eject malfs until I drilled it out.  I did very much like the weight and balance, even when scoped, but it is hardly the only lightweight .308 AR, especially nowadays.

I have had zero issues with mine.  Extremely accurate.  Possibly my favorite gun...
