With all the craze being over MLOK and Keymod these days, Im considering going back to the roots and grabbing a Picatinny Free Float. Obviously Daniel Defense makes some of the best. What are some other companies though? I know of the KAC Free Float rail

The Gen 1 series are on clearance. https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=439

Nothing old school about it, just the basic stuff that works.

I find a slim quad rail with ergo ladder covers to he as comfortable without gloves as anything. And it's better in the cold or hot than some smooth metal rails unless you buy really freaking expensive mlok/keymod/SS rail covers.

Long live quadzilla

Not necessarily. There are Picatinny based free float rails that are modular that are completely smooth except where you put small mini rails. My Daniel Defense MFR 12 is like that. I run only a small 3" Picatinny at the bottom front for a bipod, and another at 45 degree offset (yes it permits that) at the right rear of the free float for a mini reflex.

It is but one example. You do not have to go full quad or MLok or KeyMod. There are other options. I QD mount accessories to those Picatinny mini rails, which are placed only as and where needed. . This way I never have to go out and buy new stuff just to mount accessories.

This. LT is my go to quad rail. The "profile" is very nice-slim in width and a tucked in bottom rail. I can't stand the "I-beam" shapes some rails offer.

LT rails are on discount right now from their website if you are looking to make a purchase. http://www.larue.com/ar15-handguards?sort=popular
Link Posted: 2/24/2016 4:52:19 PM EST
I just put a Larue on my newest build and I'm in live. 3, 6, and 9 o'clock are tucked in for a more comfortable grip and and it is super secure. The machining is excellent and for being a 1913 rail it is not an absolute cheese grater.

-_-

With how often i read this, 90 percent of ARFCOM must have the hands of a teenage girl. I have never once felt any sort of pain or discomfort from holding any pic rail (that includes 2 DD RIS II's)

Right ?!? Honestly, sometimes the keymods are like little razor blades. Channeling your skin into the thin aluminum.
I like dumping the weight of "cheese graters", but i do believe my Colt Socom might see a DD ris II within the next year.

I work cattle, weld, run heavy equipment, fly airplanes, work with my hands all my life. The last two Daniel Defense rails I owned, A RIS II and a LITE III literally cut my hands all up just from handling. Stupid sharp. Never felt a LaRue or a KAC like that.

You're either unlucky as hell, or squeezing onto that rail for your dear life.

I don't even run rail covers anymore on ris 2s or M4 ras', just found it to be unnecessary extra weight with no advantages for me. Naked 1913 rails for the win!

I hate rail covers with a passion and used Larue, KAC, and Daniel Defense rails since around Y2K and never once used rail covers on any of 'em, but those last DD rails made me understand the cheese grater mantra.

I think you may have missed the point. Its not just the weight or even the cheeze grater effect or running rail covers to protect the slots and your hands. Its having slots where you will never even remotely mount anything, ever. And those unnecessary rail surfaces and slots are everywhere.

Actually it's not that heavy at all. It's also a SBR and the barrel is cut down so that helps a bit. There are a lot of girls in this thread complaining about weight and their soft hands. Never once have I cut my hands and I rarely wear gloves.

Why would you not like having the option more mounting points? With pic rails you have more options and flexibility IMHO.
Link Posted: 2/25/2016 11:42:58 AM EST
Quad rails are old school? Daniel Defense would be my first pick, Midwest of you want to be frugal. Both are quality.
Link Posted: 2/25/2016 12:33:20 PM EST
My vote is for Larue. Good prices right now too.

Sort of reminds me of the folks who build their own PC's, and pick the biggest case with the most exposed drive bays. It's all about possibility rather than necessity.
