I have a 16 inch POF from the exact same time period. The first shot I took with it, the empty brass failed to extract. I had to use my Dewey cleaning rod to punch it out of the chamber. I have never had any other problems with it.
I have a 12.5 Gen 3. Only problems were with Turkish MKE ammo. The extractor claw ripped right through the cartridge rims practically every shot.
I have a 14.5 inch Gen 4. No problems ever. I do find that the BCG and chamber get dirtier than the non E2 chambered guns. I shoot Hornady 150 grain LE TAP, and most any milsurp ammo you can name dating from the 1970's. Some that is notorious for leaving "tar" in the guns. I don't run steel cased. Beside any previous mentioned problems, all 3 POF's run like a sewing machine and are supremely accurate, even with the surplus stuff. The recoil is not even worth mentioning. I never bought into the "don't need to lube them" hype. ANY metal to metal moving parts should be lubricated IMHO. Any stories of them POF rifles being junk is BS. Probably from people who tried to build their own guns, were using their own reloads (or even worse, someone else's.) Or people that could hurt themselves playing with clay. I have friends who also own the 308 and/or 5.56 models. Anyone of us would trust our lives to our POF. Most of us actually do daily, by the way.
Run the snot out of it and enjoy it!
