Can a gas-piston drop-in system for a full or mid-length AR be installed and function properly on a short-length AR? Im not sure if there is any difference in systems for different barrel lengths. Thanks.

The primary difference would be the length of the operating rods.  So no, you could not just take a Rifle or Midlength kit and drop it into a Carbine gas length.   If you purchased the proper operating rod, then yes, all other parts should work fine.

This applies to Adams Arms kits.  All of the parts are interchangeable, EXCEPT the operating rod/spigot.  The operating rods are of differnt lengths for different gas length systems.
