100% they do which is why this thread and gwot style is so successful.  It's what we lusted after when we were all too broke and young to build it.

I grew up watching OIF/OEF combat footage and playing MW and MW2 and tend to gravitate towards that era of weaponry and gear, new stuff is interesting but there's a point where I feel everything just turns into form over function. I'm more than happy with a basic, no frills rifle that'll survive anything that you throw at it instead of the latest and greatest $5k AR and $9k optics and $40k NVGs

Way to make a dude feel old. I was 20 and had been in for almost 2 years when it all kicked off.

I was in boot camp when we invaded Iraq and remember how we were all stoked.

Then I wound up in Fallujah in the fall of 04.

I always pictured you being older than me.

I didn't get to do the invasion. We had just got back from another deployment and they were getting a list together of who all was going. I tried to volunteer but didn't have enough dwell time. The chose 2 guys from my section, one was about to be married and the other was married and had a kid on the way. I was single and no kids. No amount of trying to get them to understand what was going on would get through their head. I reenlisted to go to a new duty station that already had orders to go back to Iraq while they were still in Iraq.

I was in High school, 10th grade when it all kicked off after 9/11.... I remember the teachers all putting the TV's on in the classrooms when the first plane hit then we saw that second one hit Live, and everyone stared in disbelief at the people jumping out the WTC windows.

Same. 10th grade. Physical science class. Was surreal to watch, even at such a young age.

We were in JRTC training up for our upcoming deployment. We were "in the box" and had no tv's or radios and obviously, cell phones weren't as ubiquitous then so none of us had one. Our Chief called everyone together and was very very clear that this was NOT a training scenario. Someone had a radio so we were able to listen to the news that night, but it was a week before we were able to see any televised stuff. One of the guys in my squad had family that lived very close to ground zero and only found out about it during our meeting that morning.

One of my best Army friends was home on leave after AIT and was to fly out on the 11th, but he was too hungover and didn't make the flight. He would have been on one of the planes if he didn't sleep in.

I watched it happen in freshman year of high school.

I ended up in Afghanistan in 2012 with soldiers whose parents had been there less than a decade before. One guy posed for a picture on Bagram at the air traffic control tower his dad posed for a picture at.

I was in the field in Lejeune. Someone back in the rear hot-mic’d a SINCGAR up to a FM radio and we listened to the news over a Hummer radio speaker…

Man, I sure feel old now.  On 9/11 I was a Watch Commander (civilian) at a Navy Base.  I was actually on the computer (ARFCOM) that morning when Lord Trader posted that a plane had hit the WTC.   I thought it must have been a small plane or something.  I saw on ARFCOM when the second plane hit and ran back to the Police Station and was there when the Pentagon got hit and we went into FPCON Delta.  Evacuating the base of personnel and being in Delta for the next several days was surreal for sure.  Only planes in the sky were USAF on missions.

The USMC was taking folks back in that had recently separated.  I let my GF talk me out of it.  Regret it to this day.

Negative, I’m a cantankerous old bastard. And yup, that’s my lady. She’s a little younger than me, but looks way younger than me. She’s Asian, they don’t age the same way everyone else does.
