I'd definitely try a carbon fiber tube if you don't want rails. Most 'vented' tubes are not vented enough to make much of a difference.

I have done only one extended, rapid fire session with this rifle and the tube was HOT - to the point where I could hardly hold the handguard. The barrel is a gov't profile, midlength. This makes me think that a carbon fiber tube may not be the answer you need. Maybe a solid carbon fiber tube with less metal at the barrel nut area would be different.
 YMMV.

I like the Armalite National Match fiberglass handguard tube. Very strong and no thrills. I too don't want to put everything but the kitchen sink on my rifle. Just a scope, bipod, and shoot it for what I need right now.
