I'm looking to add a forearm rail to my Stag Model 8 and wanted to see if anyone has experience with either of the following models from Midwest Industries:

1. Midwest Industries MCTAR-20G2 GEN2 Carbine Length Two Piece Free Float Handguard (piston compatible with the Stag)
2. Midwest Industries MCTAR-20P Gas Piston Carbine Length Two Piece Free Float Forearm

Both seem very similar (free float, 2 piece construction, continuous top rail, ) so I would appreciate it if someone can summarize any important differences in design, ease of installation, quality / durability, fit, etc.  Any other suggestions (I would prefer to keep costs under $200) would also be welcomed.

Thanks.

I have a M8 and I have noticed that since it dumps a significant amount of hot gases right under the handguard. An aluminum handguard will absorb that heat like a heat sink and you either need to wear gloves or use a vertical fore grip or limit your rate of fire to keep that area cooler. I use Magpul MOE handguards. They are obviously plastic but they have metal heat shields inside that take all the heat and deflect the heat. And its also lighter than metal as another bonus.

I am running a Samson Evolution. If you go this route you will need to remove the barrel and slide it on from the rear (if you live in a state like mine where the muzzle break is pinned and or welded) add your accessory rails then install the barrel and mount the rail. Samson used my actual carbine in one of their videos showing you how to do this on Youtube. My rifle is the last one that Andrew works on in the video. The rail has exceded my expectations and along with more trigger time and an excellent Geissele trigger, the model 8 has become a real joy to shoot with very good accuracy.
