Can I have my Colt 20" Hbar fluted?  Do any shops do that to an existing used barrel and how much weight % can be shaved off safely?   How much should this cost?   Just curious, I love the reliability and accuracy of my Colt but it is damned heavy.  I'm moving it over to a Cav lower to save some weight but its muzzle heavy right now.  I'd love to save a bit more weight on this rifle if this is the right route??  I'd also like to know what folks are using for flash supressors on these 20's.   I have a phantom but it doesnt look right on the 20, I'll use that on the 16" build I'm working on now.  Should I stick with the stock Colt A2 type?  Looking to keep this rifle a clean A2 just a bit lighter.

Adco does fluting, IIRC they charge 150 for the whole barrel.  If you are looking for a drastic reduction in weight, you might as well have them cut it down to Gov profile.  As far as how much weight is reduced via fluting here:

Bushmaster Barrel Weights

Weight In Pounds, for milled front sight subtract 0.2 pounds

Barrel length_________Heavy Barrels________ Fluted Barrels

10"_________________2.0_________________1.9
11.5"_______________ 2.2_________________2.0
11.5/5.5"____________2.6_________________2.5
14.5"_______________ 2.5_________________2.2
14.5"AK_____________2.7_________________2.4
14.5"MY_____________2.7_________________2.4
14.5"AM (phantom)____2.7_________________2.4
16"_________________2.7_________________2.3
16" Dissipator________ 3.0_________________2.6
20"_________________3.5_________________3.0
24"_________________3.9_________________3.1
26"_________________4.0_________________3.2

Military Style Barrels rendition
14.5"M4_____________2.0
14.5"M4AK__________ 2.2
14.5"M4MY__________ 2.2
14.5"M4AM (phantom)_ 2.2
16"M4 Dissipator______ 2.3
16" Superlight________ 1.9
16"M4______________ 2.2
20"A2 (govt profile)____2.5

So you will have a 1/2 pound difference between fluting and Gov profile.  But this is based on Bushies Hbar profile and there is no "standard" Hbar profile among the different manufacturers.

Fluting does have some theoretical advantages though; it increases surface of your barrel up to 20% (according to Bushie) thereby aiding heat dissapation while maintaining more barrel rigidity than a Gov profile.

I ordered my Dissy fluted, in an effort to keep the weight down. I planned to hang a rifle length SIR on mine, and I know they ain't light.

i was looking at getting my ridiculously heavy 16" fluted, but realized i'd come out ahead selling it on the ee and ordering a new bm pencil.

there's a lot of folks on this board, most of whom have sent more lead downrange than i, that claim hbars are completely useless for semi auto rifles, and represent nothing more than a cost cutting move by manufacturers.

can't someone get a side by side range test going?

2 16" rifles-  1 hbar, 1 skinny

fire groups

do 4 mag dumps through each

fire groups again

compare

edited to add:
i only suggest this because hbar vs. skinny vs. fluted threads seems to come up every day

I may just go with the fluting, it doesnt save as much weight as I'd hoped but it's a start.  That with the Cav lower should drop off a bit of weight.  I'll have my local AR shop check the barrel for wear and determine if it's worth the money.   It still shoots great but I've dumped a couple thousand through it myself.   Also curious if there's a reliable lighter weight bolt carrier?  I'd like to shed a couple pounds off the rifle.

With the cost of shipping and the barrel work itself, it might be a more wise decision in the long run to just get a new barrel.  I would suggest a Bushie 20"  (assuming you want to stay that length) Gov profile.  They are chromelined and made from 4150 steel and the retail for 219.95.  This would be an excellent barrel for your light weight rig.

You do not however want to get a lighter bolt carrier (if they make them, I am not sure...never heard of one).  The lighter weight carrier would increase cycling time thereby increasing the probality of extraction/feed problems.  This was the problem with the M4 in full auto, so the solution came in the form of the Hbuffer, designed to slow the cycling speed.

Regarding the SIR right?

Chewbacca: Yes, the SIR, as well as the whole rifle. I have an Ace skeleton stock on the lower I have my Dissy mounted too, and to say that the rifle is front heavy would be an understatement. Balances right over my VFG, with everything (Dieter CQD grip, Surefire 962 throwlever light, EOtech 552 forward mounted) hanging on it.

I'm keeping my other bushy mostly stock, except for a BUIS. I probably will mount the EOtech to it, too, and put my Aimpoint/#22M68 back on the rifle with the SIR.

Glimmerman68: Yes, a bushy.

You of course realize where this leaves me.   If I need to buy another barrel I might as well buy a new upper.   If I buy a new upper I might as well buy a lower..... you can see where this is going.   I love my Colt Hbar simply because she's a 100% shooter and accurate, I just dont like the weight.   It's kind of like a chunky wife, you might love her and be happy with her but taking her out is something else..... uh oh.....

I feel your pain.  Cav Mk1 Lower and Bushie 16"HBAR.   Love her to death but always wondering if fluting would be beter.   Im gonna wait atleast until the Ban dies and get it threaded aswell.

Fluting is so GAY!  Please don't do it to a COLT barrel!

Buy a shit brand if you must swing that way.

I feel my bm hbar is like an overweight piece of  machinery too. However, it shoots very well. I asked a local smith recently if he could reduced the whole 20" down to a std  gov. profile to lighten things up a bit and i was told that might not be good as the procedure would cause the "surface hardness to be affected ". He also mentioned  it could become " work hardened" from the machining. I would like to hear opinions from others on my original thought. I always thought if you  machine a surface at the correct rate with correct lubricity/coolant the metallurgical integrity would be maintained. Thanks guys,

If it is done correctly, you are correct.  It is fine.  If you have a monkey running the machine, well, you shouldn't be using that milling service

The way I heard it from the Bushmaster web site at one time, Bushmaster does not recommend that a barrel be fluted after it has been rifled. At the factory, the barrel is first fluted, and  then do the rifling.

Put the candle out and step away from the barrel.   I think I'll just admit my BRD to the wife and buy another upper.... then lower.... then carrier group then...... oh you know....

I thought about fluting my Bushy HBAR but have since changed my mind.  This barrel has been very accurate and mag dumps don't seem to bother it.  I'm going to buy a couple of superlight uppers from Bushy or Colt after the ban and make new rifles anyway.  I'll need the HBAR after that for punching holes in paper and static defense scenarios.

I am debating what to do with a Colt 20" HBAR  w/ Wilson Combat brake. It is not so much heavy as it is unbalanced. Fluting/gov't profiling has been considered. I may even try to trade it in on a new 20" post-ban-death upper.

I'm getting my 20" Colt HBAR cut down and threaded for a Vortex. It will be a HBAR "carbine" just under 17".

I'm thinkin ADCO.
It will be a full handguard under 17" (including Vortex) no ban "carbine".

I have a 20" Bushmaster HBAR, fluted. While I like it, having had a chance to check out the 20" A2 Govt profile, that's what I would have bought, had Bushmaster been offering it when I bought the 20" fluted. <sigh>

After the AWB expires and I get a job again, I might replace it with a A2 Govt, just to reduce the weight some more.

Just got my RRA 16" mid length barrel back from ADCO. I had them turn the barrel under the handguards to .825, flute it and install it on a DPMS A1 upper. Is it cost effective? No. Is that what I wanted? Yes. Handles and feels so much better now. You are probably better off getting the barrel turned to gov't profile or just getting another barrel such as the Bushmaster 20" gov't profile; chrome lined, 4150 steel - hard to beat.

If Queer Eye for the straight Guy did an AR build, I guarantee it would have fluting!
