Yes there is a difference, in not only the floor plates but also the followers. No they are not interchangeable.

I believe that the USGI 20 round floor plates will slide onto the 30 round mag bodies, but won't stay in place. The 30 round floor plates will work on the 20 round bodies, if you break off the metal tab.

20-round floorplates are retained by a flat metal spring that is riveted to the front spine of the mag. This spring rusts and breaks easily, and if/when that happens, the floorplate won't stay on.
The 30-round floorplates have built-in tabs, and work equally well on 20 and 30-round mags. -Troy |
