I have been doing a lot of reading in the FAQs, this issue of Guns & Ammo "Book of the AR-15", online sources, and I am leaning in four directions:

Rock River, Armalite, Bushmaster or Stag.

Seems to me, I can build a RRA for $835, or mix and match uppers and lowers and get one from about $850 to $1100.

I am sure you can't go wrong with any of those, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of any one particular thing about any of those brands that make it more SHTF appropriate (able to get dirtier w/o malfunction, availability of replacement parts, etc).

Here is a link to my current notes. It attempts to color code my different options (do I go complete rifle, complete upper and separate complete lower, build from kit, etc):

My First AR Build

If anyone has any input, I appreciate it. I was told you all here are knowledgeable & helpful. Figured I'd see for myself.

Im at the same point you are now but just bought a few STAG stripped lowers and 2 part kits.

You may see a big price difference between the STAG and bushy and other without a massive diff in quality.

Just go with any ABC, you want go wrong, I know that sounds old school.

To me, anything else is just range guns.

Yes because the person you'd be shooting at is going to get mad if you dont have a pony or a deer on your lower

Thanks for mentioning. I saved that link because I am still not quite sure if I can settle for less than a .30 cal. I know I will have to re-work things if I go that route, just didn't want to lose the link.

That's what I am here to find out, thanks.

I'd skip those 7" bolt on rails. They may save you cash, but it won't take much hard use to snap one off with a VFG. Look into CMMG barrels they have some great choices. As for the lower, get any one that is 7075 forged & type 3 anodized w/ either a nickle acetate or Teflon finish, and has a roll mark you like. Upper receiver same advice. Lower parts kit-Bushy or RRA works good, and isn't known to break. BCG-I'd look at LMTs Enhanced BCG for the carbine your building. Back to those rails- look into Samson and Midwest Industries 2 pc. Free Floats.

I wont tell you what to do, but I will tell you what I have done so far and why.

Stripped DPMS lower at a gunshow = $138 (didn't want to wait for shipping or deal with an FFL fee. DPMS finish is about the best looking I have seen.)
RRA lower parts kit from Legal Transfers = $64 (heard they were good LPK's and good deal)
Complete RRA Midlength 16"SS upper from ADCO = $479 (Good brand, wanted stainless barrel for accuracy and good price for upper w/BCG. Everyone I asked about midlength gas systems said they helped with reliability and I like the looks)
ARMS 40L low profile flip-up BUIS from EBAY = $75 (Was the most suggested to me by people who know, and at $75 bucks, couldnt pass it up)
Magpul CTR Mil-Spec Kit from JKiser = $149 shipped (just love the looks and gets rave reviews, plus the kit came with the rubber buttpad)
2 Magpul PMags from 44Mag.com = about $33 shipped (check out the PMag vs. Truck on YouTube.....nuff said)
So by the old math that comes to $938 for Rifle with upgraded buttstock, SS barrel and 2 awesome magazines.

With all that said, the only thing I am going to change is I want to sell my DPMS Lower and get an RRA. I love the looks of the DPMS, but I just think it would be awesome to have my upper and lower from the same company.

Colt has the highest out of the box quality, then LMT. But the four you mentioned are good too.

ETA: CMMG is good.

+1

Colt is the most reliable of all brands as indicated by most of the firearms instructors.

Since SHTF is one of your main requirements- save up some money and buy
SIG 556 approx. $1200-1300 Pros of an AR Works like an AK.
PKFireams has it in stock and on his web site above.
RRA15

I just brought my first AR-15 home a few minutes ago.

She's a Colt LE6920. Maybe I drank the Kool-Aid, who knows - but from everything I've read and been told, for an out-of-the-box rifle, it's hard to beat a 6920.

I've heard good things about RRA and Stag, though, and I love my Armalite AR-10, so I suppose I'm no help at all. :P

Many many folk not happy with their 556. Many many folk are happy with their XCR's. go find a Bushy or Stag for a good deal and be happy. I had my Bushy out in the SW desert for 5 strait days, no mag in well, bolt locked bak, dust cover open(so instructors could see you where not hot), 1100 rounds, and no cleaning. It would take a lot to krunk it up. Can they do so easier then other systems? Yep. Will it do it after some dust, debris, and 10 mags? Nope. I also have an XCR. Very very sweet! Controls are the same, but they are very different weapons. I love them both.
