Hello there,

I recently bought my first AR-15, and decided on the Colt 6920 LE.

I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to attachments. I may purchase optics sometime in the future, but for now I'm looking to buy a decent mountable light. I really don't know where to begin with looking for a decent light, any help would be much appreciated. I'm a firm believer in buying the lowest costing product of the best quality, instead of the most expensive of the worst quality. I really don't want to spend more than $150 right now, but just from glancing at a few of the mountable lights I have a feeling I may need to pay more than that. I'm also not too sure on what light mount to purchase as well.

I look forward to being a future part of the ar15 community. I'm already addicted and my wallet is definitely feeling it

And the ever so popular intro pictures:

First my bone stock Colt:

My friends Bushmaster Lite with some random cheap attachments:

Both:

Kudos to who ever can name the AR on that Guns&Ammo magazine

Thanks,

Ben

Christensen arms CA-15

If you look at the equipment exchange here you can often times find a M951 light for $100-120

Surefire makes great lights..I use a standard handguard so I have a bayo lug mounted rail and put the light on that and the pressure switch on the handguard.I use a quality 30mm scope ring for the light mount and loc tited it to the rail as the whole rail is quick detachable.Your friend has a Vortex strike fire optic even at $150 its one of the best quality red dots in that price range. It gets 2000 hrs battery life is water proof, shock proof and garunteed for life they have a section here on the industry forum.I used one for 2 years before I recently got an Aimpoint M4s.

You can run one of the cheaper hand held Surefire lights in a VTAC mount if you got MOE handguards. You should be under $150 for everything.

Even without gadgets that 6920 is a very capable high quality AR just the way it is.

I know, I really dislike the stock hand guards though, I won't do much else besides the rails/grip and tac switch.

Inforce light is pretty bad ass and priced reasonably enough.

Congrats with your new AR and welcome to the black rifle disease!

That's a really great choice of your Colt LE6920, they are the standard by which all others are judged.

My first AR was also a Colt AR-15 SP1 Sporter rifle 41 years ago, I had and have many other Colt rifles, carbines, and 1911 pistols and all of them without any problems, just do proper maintenance and it will serve you well.

For a light many professional and instructors, myself also, would highly recommend any Surefire models that you like in your price range.

Impact Weapons Components (IWC) makes a mount for standard handguards, for rail mounts go for quality brands like Daniel Defense, LaRue, Vltor, etc.

Check out Brightflashlights low prices on Surefire lights at the Equipment Exchange or go to their industry forum (link below).

Got a good sling for it yet? Take a look at Vickers VCAS and Viking Tactics VTAC two point slings, I have them on my Colt carbines and they're good to go.

+1, I use them on 5 of my carbines, they're fairly cheap now, check the EE or Ebay.

Thanks for all of the feedback gentleman, I just purchased a brand new M951 with the IR cover and cable switch for $120 off ebay. @Alpha-Romeo3: As for a sling, haven't gotten one yet. I was just about to walk away from my computer with a smile on my face because I thought I had purchased all I wanted for today. I guess not

I'm liking that VTAC sling, looking into it now.

I bought a Surefire M961XM07 off of the equipment exchange for $100. It came with the pressure switch, thumbscrew mount (built in) shipping and the seller threw in a tango down rail cover and rail cover with pressure switch cutout. It was delivered promptly and well packaged. I think I chose between three different lights that were for sale. I was very happy with my buy. There's a feedback page on there too. Pretty sweet setup. Hell, the trading's so good I may build a frankengun off of there.

Looks like a good start, and welcome to the site. The CA-15's are sexy. We've sold quite a few of them. Nice rifles.

A couple of pic's. One of my 6920 with the current ACOG/sling (VCAS) the other with the Aimpoint/ bipod (rockcreek)

Pretty simple 6920 with Magpul AFG, MIAD, and CTR. KAC RAS. Missing yet is a Surefire light. This rifle will eventually be going on duty with me in the car.

I like that quote, and yea he doesn't really look too much into the parts he buys before getting them, something that people with endless money tend to do... I would never disgrace my Colt with those parts! I always read a lot about items before buying them. I just bought the VTAC sling, after that I won't be adding much else to this rifle, like I said before not a big fan of endless tacti-cool attachments. BTW, nice rifles torment.

Thanks,

Ben

You really don't have to do anything to a 6920, but a padded VTAC sling would be my first recommendation.

Next would be a good optic Aimpoint or Eotech with a backup sight something like a Troy Ind folding model.

A mounted light is best, but depending on what you plan to use it for a handheld unit will work in a pinch. In fact for serious applications you ought to have a backup handheld light anyway.

Here is what she looks like now, a few new pieces of clothing:

Colt 6920LE
KAC RAS
KAC VFG
KAC Rail Covers
Surefire M951 Weapon Light
Badger Ordinance Tactical Latch
MPUL PMAG

Not shown is my VTAC sling that I got as well.

Nice golden and carbine!

Great component choices for a new guy, just keep on sticking with the most reliable battle proven upgrades to avoid any problems, for your future optics I would highly recommend any Aimpoint model that you like, and also a long time 23 yr Aimpoint owner, never had any problems with them.

As mentioned in my earlier post I'm a very long time AR owner and I'm on my 10th Colt AR now (currently have 4 Colts, 3 X 16" carbines and one 20" rifle), your carbine is getting close to my SP6920 carbine except mine have an Aimpoint M2 (with LaRue cantilever QD mount), LMT fixed rear backup iron sight and I use both my Vickers VCAS and Viking VTAC two point slings depending on what specific thing I'm doing.

I would recommend you to try to move your vertical grip more forward around halfway of your bottom rail, try that and see if it improves the way you swing your carbine side to side, and also I removed my rear sling mount on my buttstock to prevent it from snagging anything since I don't use it, I use the slot sling mount of my buttstock.

For now just get more PMAGs at least a minimum of 7 to 14 and up to 21-22 would even be better, just practice with it often.

Here's a pic link of my Colt SP6920 carbine: Click here to see my pic

Thanks for the kind words friend, I wouldn't have been able to pick these parts out without the vast knowledge base here, I was lost not too long ago on what to purchase. I will be moving the VFG a bit forward, I did that for picture purposes I will also most likely be taking off the rear sling mount on my buttstock, I was shooting today and coincidentally it got in my way, so +1 to that. As for the p mags, I will be ordering as many as possible as my money situation sees fit, I now understand how important it is to have fresh mags ready to go, some loaded and some NIB.

Mags and ammo from here on out!
