The gun in question is my ar flat top .223. I have always used iron sights so I am new to this end of the game. I am looking to shot 150-300 yards. I don't really want a fixed power or illumation What kind of magnification would I need to see this far ? Also do I want to co wintness with the front sight

Forget about co wittnessing with a magnified optic.

What is your budget?  What size and type of targets are you shooting at?  In general, a 1-4 or 2-7 work very well for an AR.

i dont really have a budget i dont mind saving up for something nice i just dont want to over buy ( not getting a scope that goes father then the gun can shoot or more money then the gun cost).   i have been looking and i really like the Trijicon AccuPoint i know midway just had a good sale on leupold. i am not hunting with this gun just shooting at the range

I have this scope on one of my AR's.  I love it.

I assume your using a 16 inch barrel.  In that case I would go with a smaller 1-4 variable such as a Leupold VXII or one of the Mark AR scopes.  Basically a VXII but all black "tactical".

If you want something with more power I would stay in the 3-9 range with a smaller objective lens.  Too much scope can negate the portability of the rifle.

suggest a good 2-7 power for the range you stated..

I got a 4-12x40 Nikon ProStaff with Mil-Dot, but I'm planning on 400-600 yards with it..

I've had ALOT of scopes.. and 200 yards for TIGHT shots require no less then 5-6 power being used...

I would say shooting technique combined with gun and ammo selection are greater variables for shot placement.

True, a 6 power scope will allow you to see the target easier, but the bullet is going to impact the same regardless of magnification.
