Does anyone know which manufacturers build AR's that come straight from the factory with steel / aluminum lower receivers?  I.E. Sig 556, HK MR556.  I can't stand polymer receivers, they just don't feel right.  I'm looking to buy a new AR and would like some options.

Thanks

Um, most come with forged aluminum lowers.

It would be easier to list the few that have poly lowers from the factory

Who makes a steel lower? How about some Nemo titanium?

There was a company or two making a steel lower kit you put together yourself.  It just screwed together, and wasn't considered a firearm since you had to do the work yourself.
Nobody uses steel because there's no reason to.  It's heavier, rusts, more expensive due to machining costs, and aluminum is more than strong enough for the application.

The Nemo .308 AR looks cool, but yeah.... $100,000 is a bit  out of my budget.  I'd rather pick up a pallet of ammo right now.

I think your confused. The vast majority of ARs are aluminum, none are steel.  There are three or 4 companies total that make plastic lowers vs the tens of companies that make aluminum.  And the plastic ones number is the thousands at most vs the millions of aluminum lowers.

Group Industries and DPMS had Stainless Steel receivers a while back.  ATI, NFA, and GWACS make polymer lowers.  GWACS is the only one of those I'd trust.  Everyone else uses aluminum.  That equates to about 99% of all ARs being aluminum.

Plum Crazy and New Frontier polymer lowers are fiber reinforced and, while I was skeptical, I picked up a few of them and have been nothing but impressed. Replaced the hokey plastic takedown pins and trigger groups.

There's a good chance that 3 of them have been made into Post-86 Dealer Samples... and they just run and run, and take all manner of abuse. The way I see it, if I ever have to surrender my FFL/SOT, I won't lose any sleep over a couple of $30 receivers. But like I said, they've been nothing short of impressive, despite not being on 'the list'

At one time one of the 80% lower companies was advertising lowers from all sorts of exotic material.

Running f/a is not abuse, that really only test the barrels and maybe gas system. Do a few pogos, let the rifle fall onto a bench, slip onto the ground, that would be "normal" abuse IMO.

I dont think the plastic would take that stress

Ha. But on a serious note, I would love to see a master wood-craftsman/machinist make a functional ar15 out of ebony. *when I say functional, I am referring to the action, not actually shooting bullets
