Since the original thread was archived, and it was one of my favorites, it's about time for a sequel. Plus, I built (fraternal) twins. I used the same components on both rifles because they're perfect for me, and the feel of the rifles is identical. Here's mine, so let's see some pictures of your Troy / VTAC Alpha rail equipped AR15s.

Lowers:
LMT Sopmod Gen 2 stocks
Geissele SD-E triggers
Magpul MOE trigger guards
Magpul MOE+ grips

Uppers:
10.5" barrel with 9" Troy Alpha, LaRue FUG, Aimpoint T1
20" barrel with 15" Troy Alpha, Harris 6-9 BRM-S, eventually will have a Vortex PST 4-16x50 FFP Mrad
AAC 51T Muzzle brakes
LaRue-marked Troy BUIS
Noveske QD sling mounts

ETA for TRX rails too since it's almost the same aesthetically.
ETA posting what your rail length and barrel length are is also helpful.

Love the idea, great looking guns. Currently building a 10.5" myself.
I'd love to see a picture of the 20" with a suppressor

Ask and ye shall receive. Sure makes the 10.5" look short.

I have the DD mfr12 rail, and I'm tempted to make an SBR with the shorter version as well.

What the heck, I'll play. This is my first rifle, I've got two other lowers finished that need uppers.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you benefit from having the small tube red dots closer to the eye. I think it allows you to pick up the dot easier. YMMV.

I agree, in my pictures above my red dot is all the way forward on the upper and it will be moved back for this very reason. Not as far back as yours but definitely closer to the back of the receiver than it is now.

One I can play in!
The original was 795 out the door:

After:

Vortex Viper PST1-4x in an ADM
13" VTAC alpha
Magpul MOE grip
Still needs a front sight
Denny's Recon barrel
Have since added a magpul sling point on the top rail and an MS3.

do what is best for you, but for me, all the way forward works better. You have a larger field of view that way.

Quoting some army manual google found for me lol

"The M68 mounts directly on the integrated rail on top of M16A4 rifles and M4-series carbines (Figure 2-23 ). The half-moon spacer (1, Figure 23 ) must be installed to raise the M68 above the front sightpost. The Soldier’s preference dictates the notch that the M68 is mounted on. Although any notch is acceptable, testing has shown that the farther away the M68 is from the Soldier’s eyes, the better his field of view."

Instead of only nitpicking Ill add a few pics :)

My current HD rifle

Specs:
BCM Blemish upper w/ 14.5 bcm bfh middy bbl.
Battlecomp P/W
Spikes lower w/Doublestarr LPK and Geissele SD-E
Aimpoint micro on Larue mount
Inforce WML
Troy squid grips
Larue Apeg Grip

Since the theme is twins, here is the twin to the rifle above. This is probably my favorite range carbine.

Specs:
Bravo 16" ss410 middy W/ Rainier arms XTC (love this comp, cant be beat for the money)
vortex viper pst 2.5-10 on a burris mount
Doublestar lower and LPK w/Geissele SD-C trigger
Troy BUIS and Troy alpha rail 11"
Link Posted: 3/20/2013 5:26:48 PM EDT
Question to all the alpha rail users. On my 14.5" custom build, I have a troy lo pro gas block, and if I install one of the small rail sections, the backer plate almost touches the gas block. So my question is, will this cause problems? Because it is close enough for the bbl to contact it when shooting.  Currently I have the rail positioned so that it is behind the gas block.

Shew, Im burning this thread up :p

I haven't decided where it's final mounting position will be. I built this for my wife who is only about 5' tall, so all of her long guns are youth models. She can decide where it ends up.

As someone else said they are easier to pick up the dot when they aren't mounted too far forward.

There's a really good study done by the Dutch Army I found on TOS on optic mounting positions.
http://rapidshare.com/files/2314436698/Plasseringavoptikk.pdf
Basically, the most effective place to place to mount a red dot is immediately forward of the receiver.

An optic placed near the rear is slower and less accurate than an optic farther forward.

Inforce light is great for the money.  Light weight, great ergonomics and positioning at 12 o'clock is readily available when transitioning from left to right shoulder.  When compared to other lights systems hands down great product!

Is that the 11" or 13" rail? I just bought a Sig M400 that I want to put an Alpha rail on but can't decide on length.

13" rail on 16" barrel. You won't regret the 13".
