Just saw a pre ban at the local gunstore and the finish looked like a semi clear grayish spray on coating. The inside of the upper looked like the finish was worn off and had raw aluminum exposed. The upper was cast as the marking were raised. Is this the way they came from the EA?? Thanks

Yes, EA uppers and lower came with a gray moly finish about the same color as the moly disufide finsih on USGI magazines. In fact, you could "touch up" scratches in the finish by just shooting a light spritz of dry moly lube, just like you would mags with the finish worn off. They advertised that their receivers were the same color as the original M16's, and that their particular process was superior to others on the market. Superior or not, it was a good, tough finish. The wear marks inside are normal, and can be found on any AR15/M16 that has some moderate usage.

I have two EA preban's... one that is at least ten years old and looks as good as they day it was bought, one that was refinished by Lauer and it matches my Alexander Arms 21 Genghis M4 upper perfectly. Wouldn't hesitate to buy one if the price is right.
