ok so im going to purchase an eotech
 here is my delima is it worth the extra $ to go for the 552. are the only differences the NV capability and the submersion depths. I could almost get a larue QD mount for the price difference. so what are you thoughts and/or experiences.posted this in optics but getting zero response |

Well, obviously, if you plan on using NV or going swimming with it, get the NV model, if not, don't.

If you don't ever plan on using NV, just get the 512.

the one that takes AA batteries ( i dont remember if they both do, i think so though...)--dont do what i did and get the n type batteries
oh, and +1, unless you are going to be using NVDs, i would just get the 512 |

It is the same optic, so if you don't plan to go diving with it, and have no intention of buying expensive NV equipment, you woudl just be flushing money down the toilet. |

512 if you get the 552 then you have to buy the nightvision and that will cost more money.

I always think it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.
Never know when the urge is going to strike to buy some NVGs. Firearms tend to make you buy things that you didn't realize you couldn't live without until you see it at the shop/gun show. h.gif |

I bought the 552. I figure some day I'll have NV to go with it. If not, no big deal.
Plus I got a good deal on it. |

I have a 552. While I am a civie and don't own any NV at the moment, it is something I would eventually love to have (why not?). Anyway, with the price of technology decreasing daily, I figure that in a few years, an NV monocular wouldn't be out of the question. I figure that it is better to be prepared for that. It beats having to buy a new EoTech down the road.

( we are at ARFcom, aren´t we? ) Seriously: get the 552 first, NV and better water resistant. ( this is where I am, got this one, mounted it on a Marlin Camp - no flash at night! ) Then get the 512. This I will order after I have my AR. H |

I believe both are equally water resistant - as in rain, puddles, etc. The only difference is the depth they can be submerged to, which only seems to be relevant for diving (like SEAL insertions) or tragic boating accidents. The NV vision thing I can understand, if someone may be planning to buy NV someday - but the "water resistance" argument seems completely moot to me.

If your planning on hitting the sandy trails of Afghanistan with the Seals Six special operations team or have aspirations to undertake a covert-op in your back yard at 3:00 in the morning go with the 552. If you want to have a solid dependable sight to shoot at the local rifle range go with the 512.

I agree with most of the above recommendations....... if you don't intend on REALLY abusing it and don't intend on ever using NV then save your money. On the other hand, if you have a lot of $$$ and think NV might be "in your future" why not get the 552. You could go one step further and wait for the 553 to hit the streets
 ....... NV compatible, submersible to 66 ft. and it uses the same batteries as your Surefire .....if you have one. It will only be approx. $150 more than the 552.....
