Just sold one of my ARs to fund a rebuilt transmission. Now I feel compelled to build one to replace it. I know aim has a good deal on Mega upper/lower. Anyone have any thoughts on other billet receivers that wont break the bank? What would you suggest? Where would you suggest. Thanks in advance.

i like the SI defense ones.

But i dont know what your idea is on breaking the bank.

And i dont think id ever buy billet unless it was just a fun gun.  Serious guns should be forged :P

I just finished a Mega build and couldn't be happier. Assembly was the smoothest I have ever experienced.

Got one of the Mega Ma Ten 308 matching sets on order through Rainier and my next AR15 will be built with the Mega matching set ! That is unless I can convince myself to go with the Mega Monolithic upper receiver...

Mega has a tensioning screw but I don't think they have the rear detent screw.

I am noob and hope that I am not asking a dumb qustion but are you serious? Is forged really superior to the billet machined lower?

In terms of strength theoretically yes.

In practice... i haven't heard anyone breaking a billet one through normal use, but i like to think that my SHTF rifles will take anything i can throw at it.

But like i said, thats just my personal emotions on the subject of serious use rifles.

I plan on buying a billet set for my next build but that will just be a fun gun, and wouldnt be the rifle i would take with me if i could only choose one. But then again i wouldnt NOT use it if it was the only one i had :P

I guess what im trying to say is if you only have one i think your better off with forged, if you have a few nothing will be hurt if you have a nice sexy billet one.

Ahh Ok. Makes sense now. Thanks for the explination!

I always thought billet would look cool. Maybe on a target rifle... THAT would be nice...

I dig on my Quentin Defense billet lower.  I bought my lower from the first run (serial number in the teens) and have been very pleased with it.  They didn't have a matching upper at the time, so I went with a Vltor billet upper.  It doesn't have the tensioning bolt as it was one of the original runs, but they have since started doing it as a standard feature.  I will say the fit is so good between the Vltor & Quentin, that it doesn't need anything to tighten it.

Quentin Defense just started doing the upper/lower combo in OD green and flat grey.  I saw them at a local gun show and really like the grey.  They are also working on a new billet upper.  In fact, I ordered a set in grey for a future build (I'm going to try out a 6.8SPC next).  They also mentioned doing a matching railed handguard in those colors as well (Young pattern rail).  And yes, I asked about tan/FDE and they were still working on getting the color right.  And no, I don't work for them.  I paid for my lower and am just a happy customer.

Sorry guys, the Quentin trigger guard is not for me. I am torn mainly between the Mega and Tactical innovations. This build is not my go to (I have others). Any input would be highly appreciated.

I like the Tactical innovations lower over the Mega because of the triggerguard.  But I really like the Mega upper reciever.  I didn't care for the Quentin triggerguard at first, but it has really grown on me.

I voted Mega out of those 2.

But i still prefer the looks of the SI defense ones.

I have both the mega and the tactical innovations. They're both awesome! I have one of the first megas when they ha the rounded trigger guard which I like a little better than the current production. No doubt about it though for SHTF I'll take my KAC all day every day. That being said both mega and Tactical Innovations were excellent in terms of fit and finish and both are a good fit with my Vltor MUR uppers.
