Are there any easily convertible 9mm mag blocks still in production? I'm looking for something I can pack in my range bag and swap my 223/556 over to 9mm quickly without having to punch out the bolt catch each time. Just pop on a new upper and slip in the block without the need for a hammer and punch. The VM HY Tech block seemed to fit the bill, but it seems like the production of them has been "discontinued" at the stores I've found.

Hahn top loading block. Just slides in from the top when you need it and right back out when you don't. Only sacrifice is no bolt hold open.

RRA is supposed to be like that. slides in from the bottom and has an allen wrench to tighten into place.

I managed to pick up a used spikes block that tightened in front and back.

I've got a Hahn non-dedicated top loader, it's plug n play, just drops right in from the top. But I only run Metalform mags so can't say it will run reliably with anything else, since there's no up n down adjustment. And no LRHO.

Never used a bottom loader but every one I've seen has some up n down leeway so I wouldn't consider that a 'quick swap' unless you could quickly & relaibly re mount it at the same height every time. And you'd still need a tool to unscrew it.

I could remove and replace my Spikes block at the range.  Have a dedicated build though, so no need.  Might take some fiddling to get right, but IIRC, I eyeballed it the first time and it's been working ever since.

I have a bottom load rra it goes in and out really easy and locks in with a post locking mechanism that only requires a lot Allen key. Takes about 30 seconds to set up.  I haven't shot it yet but it hand cycles pretty well in random positions plan on test fire this weekend will report back

I bought a used hahn dedicated block, butchered the he'll out of it, made it a top loading. I over did it and now it doesn't have bolt hold open. It's an option.

What were these called and who actually made them? I don't think I've ever seen one for sale....

They are discussed here:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_15/166968_VM_Hy_Tech___repairs_fitting____My_PICS_repaired_9_29_2008.html

They come up for sale occasionally.  Generally about $250 last I looked.
