What is the difference between a "partial fence" and "full fence" AR/M16 reciever? Which one is more common or older?

The full fence receivers are the ones you see everyday. There is a long, heavy boss that runs along the top of the lower, just below the ejection port, and there is two thinner ribs, shaped like a reverse 'L', which surround the front and bottom of the mag release.

Partial fence lowers were made from late 1963 to early 1967 or thereabouts, total numbers produced would be about 600 000. This is out of the eleven million or so AR-15s ever made. Figure another 3-400 000 slab sided lowers, all the rest have a full mag fence.

Awesome info, thanks.

So would a partial fence lower be historically correct when mated with an A1 upper that has a teardrop forward assist and a birdcage flash hider? I'm assuming the bolt carriers were no longer chrome plated by then.

Thanks again.

Either partial or full fence lower would be appropriate, since the full fence was introduced in the middle of the Viet Nam experience. If you want an early type, go for the partial fence. If you want the later type, go full.

Well, we don't have all the transition dates down just yet, though Ekie seems to be working pretty hard on it. I personally believe that the setup you describe did exist for a short period of time, though generally speaking, type II receivers (with the partial fence) are usually associated with type II 3-prong flash hiders, while type III receivers (full fence, no reinforcements) go with birdcage flash hiders. You should take a look at Ekie's tacked thread on USGI AR-15 variants on page 1.

If your wanting a "correct clone" and are using a forward assist along with a bird cage flash suppresser, then you would want to use a full mag fence lower.

You must be getting 600,000 based on serial numbers. I would put it closer to 350,000 thousand partial fence lowers. Partial fences start at about 40,000, and end at about 700,000. Thing is far as I can tell Colt's skipped a bunch of numbers from 200,000 through 499,999. Seems those number were reserved for tool room experiments, and limited commercial production.

But, does anybody have a picture of the "partial fence"?

I was wondering, would it be such a bad thing if I used a slab side lower on a gun that uses the partial fence? I'm thinking about the ASA slab side lower; I love the look of the slab side!

ETA: Click Here for the thread about ASA's new lowers coming out soon.

Hopefully ASA will actually come thru with this deal.

This might be off topic, but is anyone else strangely attracted to that lady with the M16?

Yea, but that's an old picture. I think she's like 60 now.
