It has a softer recoil impulse which is one of the biggest reasons for its popularity IMO.

It's a reference to the length of the gas system.  

Other common gas system "lengths"/references include Rifle, Carbine, and (increasingly) the Intermediate length, which is designed for use use on 18" bbls. The most common bbl length for the MLGS is 16 inches, and use on 14.5" bbls  seems to be rapidly growing in popularity too.

More specifically (re: your question), because the midlength gas system is longer than that of the carbine, the handguards are correspondingly longer as well; which a lot of people find advantageous, myself included.
