I have searched but without much help.

What if any are the benefits to a dissy and recce?

I think I have answered all my own questions about what it takes to build each.
But I could not find the benefits to either.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
For other building noobs.

Recce - 16" match barreled carbine usually equiped with extended handgaurds and a bipod. "Low drag sniper rifle"

Dissipator or "Dissy" - 16" length gas system under rifle handguards w/ rifle length FSB.

ETA: All above information is corrected as I get more info.

Dissipators have carbine length gas systems.

You get rifle length iron sights, and a fully shrouded barrel.  On a dissipator with rails, you can mount lights farther forward so the sidespill isn't lighting up your firearm, and you get the light further away from your body when viewed at 90degrees off.

Dissipators have a carbine gas system hidden under the handguards with another front sight base out front that only serves as (obviously) a front sight base. This second FSB has no gas function. This gives you a longer sight radius and a rifle-length handguard on a carbine barrel.

Should note that you can cut a rifle barrel down to 16" and use the rifle length gas system, but you have to open the port up a bit to make a dissipator as you loose length from gas port to muzzle.  You could make a mid lenth dissipator as well if you wanted.

Factory dissipators are carbine gas systems though.

I dislike Dissy's. Waste of a gas block, IMHO. I would rather by a middy, put a 12" rail on it with a flip front sight on the rail.

Not all do.  Some companies use 16" barrels with rifle length gas systems.  Others build them, like me.

With what I've gathered so far is the dissy has no specific benefits?

Dissies also can have midlength gas system.

It depends on what you want and/or need.  The Dissy gives you rifle length sight radius, which implies it has more accuracy potential when using irons.  The rifle length gas system is smoother than a carbine length system, so if those two benefits don't fit your bill, then it won't do anything for you.

BTW, it is called the Dissy because it is supposed to dissipate heat faster than a carbine system, FWIW.

How much can you cut down the 20" without gas port work?

18" worked fine for me.  Most who have gone 17" or shorter have to open up the gas port.
