A coworker of mine gave me 20+ rounds of 5.56 ammo he had purchase many years ago when he had his AR. The ammo is tarnished to the point where the cases have black stains with a few of them starting to show some pitting (he left them in his garage in a paper bag). The headstamps say TW67.
Not wanting to test the big bang theory, what is the proper way to dispose of this ammo? Is it as simple as taking it down to the local gun shop or is there another means that I should follow? I realize that dropping it into the regular trash is not the correct way. Sorry for the pre-school questions; I've never had to throw ammo away before. Thanks! M590man

Any type of oil in a buket with the ammo submerged for two weeks, then throw it away it will be inert.

Drop it in the drug-infested ghetto area of your respective town.
40% chance they'll put it in a mis-chambered firearm and kaboom it. 59% chance they'll fire it into the air and miss, or at someone and miss. 1% chance they'll kill a fellow banger. |

LOL.........I like it!  Most of the time if I come across old "Inop" ammo.........I'll deep six it in the "Cal sag canal" |

Call your local cop shop.
I was in the same boat. I had rifle and shotgun ammo the I questioned. When I call they said they would take it all. |

Pull the bullets with a pair of pliers, dump the powder on the lawn and toss the brass in the trash.
We are not dealing with nuclear waste here.

That's kind of funny, because I actually bought about 250 rounds of the Twin Cities stuff from 1970 in loose bags at a local gunshop not too long back. I guess some guy brought it all in and wanted to sell it. There were quite a few cases that were tarnished and had some green corrosion on them. None were pitted though. Anyway, I have went through about 200 of them so far and haven't had a problem. It's good and hot, and pretty accurate too. I would say if they are pitted to stay away from them, but if it's just a little tarnish and corrosion, go ahead and blast. YMMV

I still have a store of Twin Cities 67 still clean and shoots GREAT... Damaged dented Mil-spec
get tossed in canal. Sealant will give way sooner or later....Powder will get wet. |

Or you could just put it in a paper bag in your garage and forget about it. |

+1 with one exception. Insted of tossing the brass (I) would probably use the empty casings, still primed, to shoot wooden dowell rods across the back yard. Just using the primer charge oughta toss a dowell pretty far. |

5 easy steps.
1) Dig out that old Star Wars lunch pail. 2) Put ammo in lunch pail. 3) Put Silica Gel pack in also. 4) Bury in backyard. 5) Wait for the Zombies to arrive, you'll be happy you have it then. |

Get some Kroil and let it soak for about 10 minutes, then throw it in the trash
