This can't be right! We all know ARs don't work right even when they are clean!
  The solid line of dust where the upper and lower meet was pretty interesting.   These are pictures of my rifle after the desert biathalon match in Pecos. Prior to shooting the match I had 500 rounds through the rifle without cleaning, and 1,000 since a total detail cleaning. You'll see the dust completely coats the outside of the gun, and there is a good amount of carbon in the upper receiver and on the bolt carrier. The rifle functioned flawlessly for the duration of the competition, and still worked earlier this week when I fired it. Closing the dust cover between shooting stations definitely helped keep the inside of the action cleaner than it would have been otherwise. I'm giving it a complete detail cleaning tonight, starting with blowing it off with an air compressor. |

I always hated it in the army where the automatic reaction to a malfunction was, "Should have cleaned your weapon better". Sure, a clean weapon is important, but it should still be able to fire while filthy.

I ahve put 3000 rounds, 60% Wolf, 40% Q3131A, through my AR in a week with no malfunctions. I did nothing more than a daily squirt of CLP and pulled a boresnake through the bore after about 2K.

It's from a series of science fiction novels, The Legacy of the Aldenata, by John Ringo. I had a few custom serial numbers done up with "AIW" in them, AIWs (Advanced Individual Weapons) are the rifles used in the novels. I thought is seemed familar. I've enjoyed that series of books, although the target audience seems to be several years younger than me. The fact that they take place in places I go to fairly often makes it that much more interesting. |

I havent cleaned this rifle since I built it almost a year ago. Its not been through the desert or anything like that, but I wanted to just keep shooting it until something stopped. Its true it doesnt get shot as much as my other rifles, but I would have to guess there is probably about 1000 rounds through it. It is completely dry and the inside filthy to the touch. Still suprisingly accurate as well. I just wanted to keep shooting it till something happened. Its getting a little boring.

I am guilty of sheer negligence, and yet my Carbon 15 keeps shooting despite weeks between cleanings. Thank God carbon fiber can't rust.

I am very impressed on how clean the inside is. I am not talking about the carbon, but rather the desert dust. If that dust flap is closed, it is very effective!

The Army was right... If an AR gets filthy enough to jam because it's filthy, that's an operator headspace issue... Which is why they make such a big deal of it... So long as you don't abuse it, the AR will run forever... But if you go thru 13,000 rounds and don't field-clean it, that MIGHT ccause it to jam... |

When my rifle gets that dirty, I hose it off with water before I even start cleaning it.
So how was the match? Was 5.56 adequate for knocking all of the steel down? |

Anyone remeber Brad's post on a dirty carbine over on LF Forum??
Now, that was DIRTY!!! And running strong. I have never seen a bolt that filthy. BTW, my main carbine hasn't been cleaned since the first of the year. A little lube here and there is all you need.

I did a stress test. 3K-ish and the ejector reetaining pin broke. FTE. Bang, Jam, clear. Bang, Jam, clear.
Stripped it down, found broken pin, replaced. Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang.... |

my gun hasn't jammed yet... nor have i ever had a failure while using any of the m16a2's while in the arms or m16a4's...
my personal weapon hasn't ever... i've seen them fail.. but most if not all because of bad mags... |
