I never really fooled around with the carbine length barrels till now (have had and still do have a few 20" guns).

What's the feed channels  I occassionally read about.? What differentiates an M4 barrel from the standard lenth (other than length and weight!)

feed ramp cuts in the reciever and extension allow for less chance of failure to feed, etc.  The bbl has a step cut for mounting the M203 grenade launcher.
